TED1001 Findings.

It is a known issue with the TED1000 and TED500 Series power monitors. Power line signals killing X10 and possibly Insteon.

Awhile back I picked up a few of the TED1001 USB port models with no TED Footprints Software support. From eBay.
I finally got to doing the Modification on one of them.  From the Coccoontech Forums to route the raw data out of the USB port for other programs to use.
You could also just tap the TTL signal from its power line modem chip and not need to route it to the USB Interface Chip. If your interface used TTL.

I can verify that when the MTU sender is sending signals. The receiver LED on my Smarthome 1132CU is constantly flashing and the Advanced Controller screen. In the display RAW Data mode. Shows a constant stream of 1's and 0's.

I used the evaluation version of Docklight Scripting to see the MTU data processed by the receiver in the TED1001.
So it did work. Though right now I have no clue what I would do with the data.

Any clues as to their protocol?

It might be a very simple fix to have the sensor unit send its data via WiFi using the ESP8266 at truly minimal cost thus keeping the data off the powerlines.

I am not too sure. The link to the modification web site is in this link. It had nice photos and a sample perl script example.

I would think the MTU sending unit in the breaker box Would be where the information is processed and then sent over the power lines.
Maybe where the WiFi chip would have to get its information.

The information in the file I have. Not sure if it is 100% correct.
The power line modem in the display units output.
Async 1200bps N81 format.
Every second an eleven Byte binary packet is sent from the MTU.
This packet contains at least, packet count,current power measurement, voltage and check sum.
Byte 0    Sync Always hex$55
Byte 1    Address of the MTU
Byte 2    Counter
Byte 3    Chart is blank
Byte 4,5  Power in killowatts=1.19 + 0.84*(x-288)/204
Byte 6    Chart is blank
Byte 7,8  Voltage Line Voltage =123.6 + (x-27620)/34
Byte 9    Check Sum

I'm familiar with the TDA5051A Powerline Modem chip they're using. It functions much like X10. You can control the timing and you can change the frequency on the powerline by changing the crystal. I really have no interest myself but would think someone will soon hack it to send the data via WiFi with the ESP8266 given its low cost - $4 for the module below.


If they're sending 120bps via the powerline it would require 20 bursts per each 60Hz cycle. It would be interesting to look at the powerline on a 'scope.
