Help! New to X10
« on: May 01, 2020, 03:29:52 PM »

Hello all, thank you for your existence!  I purchased a new home in Scottsdale, AZ awhile back and am still discovering "things".  When I first moved in, I found I could not find a switch for the entry-way wall sconce and while investigating I found J-box with a blank cover nearby that contained a device of some sort wired to the light fixture.  By removing the wired component I killed the sconce light.  My assumption was the previous owners had made off with the controller.  That light is still inoperable.  Fast forward a few months (sorry to admit) and I had the house painted and the when removing the masking tape they had stuffed in tow courtyard fixtures, they "shorted" one of the fixtures (can light) tripping the circuit breaker.  Once the breaker was reset, I found that the on/off and dimmer switch for the two can lights (as well as curbside address light and a second wall sconce) did not work and all four of the light (two cans, second wall sconce and curbside address light were on and could not be dimmed or turned off.  Deciding to investigate, I turned the circuit off at the panel and removed the on/off dimmer switch at which time I found it was mark X10 PRO - Model XPT.  After removing the switch from the circuit completely, all 4 lights are back on.  I believe this tells me that the X10 Pro Model XPT is a transmitter that "was" controlling the circuit by transmitting to a receiver "somewhere".  I have no idea where that receiver is, even after removing both of the can lights and looking in every conceivable j-box between the switch and the first fixture.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to find the receiver?

The switch I removed seems to be really old and when I look for a replacement, the switch is available for one or two addresses, but indicates a transmitter is required in addition to the switch, whereas I believe my units is the transmitter and switch combined - does anyone know if that is true.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to provide.

The XPT is an X10 power line controller. With different face plates. That determine its function.
Here is the link to the XPT User Manual. It also shows the different face plates and what each can do.

Depending on the age of the XPT it maybe the original version that used original face plates that are not inter changeable with the present ones. http://kbase.x10.com/wiki/XPT

Do you have the part number of the module you removed? It maybe a fixture module. That goes inside the light fixture or a J Box with a blank cover You will have to reinstall it if you want the XPT to control it. With the XPT reinstalled using the buttons on it and going through the house. You maybe able to find more buried X10 devices or X10 wall switches.
