Can I tell if my CM12U is dead by connecting it to a terminal emulator and issuing some commands?

Would a Bus Pirate help in identifying any problems?

I believe the CM12U is the CM11A we used. For use in Europe.
Uses the same Active Home software from what I see on the European web sites and serial port cable.
Here is the protocol document for the CM11A. It should help you.

Actually that was far too complicated for me. I was thinking I could simply hook up something  like minicom to the CM12U just to see if there was any life in it.  The unit gets warm, but having tried to access it previously I got results which I couldn't understand.

I'd prefer to try and access it from the command line rather than using a GUI.

There was a command line utility that came with the CM11A called "X10Comm.exe". There may have been something similar for the CM12U.

I've finally managed to get heyu running and it appears that my CM12U isn't dead after all.
