Powerline Broadband Internet!
« on: December 20, 2005, 11:43:08 AM »

Here is an article that I think has MUST be
commented on. I believe that this issue
will have an immensly negative impact on
the use of our systems.

I'm not so sure.

This is something the cable and DSL
industries are already fighting, along with
the telcos. This is something that bears
watching, but I don't think will have a great
impact in the near future.

It looks very interesting.

In reading though, it looks like it uses a
radio frequency on the power lines.

I am not sure if it is going to interfere
with the X-10 signals, or it the X-10
signals are going to cause a lot more
trouble with the internet equipment looking
for a radio signal on the power line, and
then seeing the (big by comparison) X-10
signal.

Hopefully someone on this forum is from an
area where they are testing this.

Not sure where I read it, but someone (X10,
ACT, etc) has done preliminary testing and
found BBPL not to be a problem for PLC. I
could not get to this article, but isn't
BBPL up in the GHz while X10 modulation is
120KHz? If BBPL IS that high in frequency, I
doubt it could have any effect, any
subharmonics close to X10 would be very
attenuated. Ohio, Calif, Texas, and Kentucky
have test bed areas...gotta be some X10
users who would be screaming by now if a
problem(?).

The cable and telco industries don't want
any more competition. If BBPL lives up to
the hopes, it will be MUCH faster than cable
or DSL broadband.
