Dial Up Feature excellent....but...
« on: January 15, 2006, 04:24:51 PM »

The dial up feature of MyHouse is quite
excellent.  It allows the control of
ActiveHome at a remote site which does not
have a constant connection to the internet
such as high speed.

All you have to do is dial the location a
set number of times within period and the
remote computer logs onto the internet
automatically and then then be controlled.

Credit where credit is due.  This is a well
though out feature.

However.....there seem to be a couple of
bugs with it...

Firstly, I specify that I wish the
connection to remain active for 10 minutes
only.  In this way I don't tie up the line
for too long.  MyHouse is supposed to
disconnect after this time period, but it
doesn't.

I logged on 40 minutes ago and the system
is still connected.  This is a major
problem.

X10Pro, is the disconnection time based on
when the remote computer first connects to
MyHouse or when the controlling computer
disconnects from the service?  Are there
any other considerations which allow or
prevent connection to the system at the
remote site e.g. Windows settings, RASPHONE
stuff etc? Also, could you please test this
as it might cost me a fortune in phone
calls if I can't disconnect.
The second issue is with using a macro to
send an e-mail.  I would MyHouse to detect
no internet connection and then dial up and
connect when a e-mail is to be sent.

It does not do this.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Sounds like the disconnect timing could be a
bug. We'll take a look.

Two thoughts on a macro to connect and send
an e-mail:

1) Set your Internet settings to
automatically dial when a connection is made.
I'll have to poke around to find the exact
configuration, but you should be able to set
up your connection so that when a program
tries to access the Internet it dials
automatically.

2) We could add connect/disconnect commands
to the AHP for Macros. I'll check with the
team on this one.

Thanks, that would be a useful feature to
actually end the service and disconnect
from the phone line.

I've been connected for 24 hours now at
$1 / hour and it's getting very
expensive....

Update: 2 days in and approaching $60 in
dial up costs....still MyHouse does not
connect from dial up.  I even had call
waiting put on the line to interrupt the
call.

That works, but then MyHouse relentlessly
keeps trying to re-dial until it reconnects
to the internet...which it obviously does.

I have some design ideas:

1: As X10 pro stated - Add a Internet
disconnect button on the client or host
(the same function might be solved by
executing the windows command RASDIAL /d in
the macros).

2: Extend the control features in the user
set up, so that an 'Admin' user can have
rights to disconnect from the internet and
MyHouse.  A button or menu option could be
added to the client view which properly
ends the MyHouse session and performs the
internet disconnect without having to
program this in a macro on the host PC
(i.e. a hard coded client menu option).

More importantly though, please fix bug in
the preferences where MyHouse should end
the session and disconnect from the
internet automatically after a user defined
period of time.
