XP Pro doesn't recognize CM15A device
« on: April 12, 2005, 02:18:00 AM »

I am very disappointed in this product.  I
have spent 2 hours trying to get the CM15A
to work.  I have down loaded the latest
version of the SW - V3.183, rebooted
numerous times, and the device is still not
recognized.

What does it take to make it work?

Dis-connect the USB, unplug the CM15A and
take the batteries out. Another thing you
might want to try is to plug it into a
different USB port - if your computer has 4
USB ports (2 on the front and 2 in the
back), try using the ones in the back. I
have had problems with some devices not
being recognized in one port but they will
in the other. Then run AHP and see what
happens. If not then with the CM15A
connected, goto Control
Panel/System/Devices and see what is
displayed - you should see a device with
either a question mark (Unknown Device) or
there should be something under USB
devices. See if there is a device driver
being loaded for X10.

I have notified many of the same issues with
the CM15A and the new software.  I have
downloaded the latest updates that helped
make the CM15A visable when using a USB
hub.  I have noted that just unplugging the
USB cable from the CM15A and plugging it
back into the unit will make it disappear.
The root cause seems to be the drivers.  If
you plug everything in and you have
successfully loaded the software and reboot
your machine it will find the unit and you
will be able to talk to the unit.  The
removal of batteries, different USB ports,
etc is frustrating to say the least.  I have
loaded the latest drivers, which addressed a
few issues, but the connection and
disconnection of a USB device should be
allowed and does not seem to be supported
with the current drivers.  My last
ActiveHome controller never had this time
issue, but it used the serial interface.
Not sure why others are not seeing this
issue, I have tried it on Windows 2000 and
Windows XP with the same results.  Very
intermittent, works fine if you boot with
the unit plugged into your PC, not the
normal situation I use.  I often update my
units by plugging them into my home computer
to reset timers, add devices, etc.  Most of
the time I use the unit as a master timer to
control lighting, etc.  Performing these
routine adjustments has been very
challenging using this new controller and
their newest software.

Let me know if others have found solutions.

I, too, have this same problem.  Whenever
the unit is disconnected from the PC for
any length of time, when I plug it in for
downloading I get the "USB Device Not
Recognized" error.  Only rebooting the
computer does not clear it.  The only way
to clear it is the unload and reload
batteries method.

I am using v3.186 of AHP on XP Home.

By the way, is there a way to email tech
support directly about this or do you just
post and wait (hope) one of the x10 techs
respond?

Thanks.

Mudguppie,

Yes, you can send an email directly to X10
support.  All the posts in the forums
suggest they are very slow to respond, but I
have seen X10 Pro respond to several issues
posted in the forums.

I too have had to remove the batteries and
unplug from the wall to get the system to
get recognized again.  Rebooting is an
absolutely requirement.

Even when you get the unit to work it will
go out to lunch within a few hours even
while plugged into my laptop.

I finally decided to return my unit for a
refund.  Many users have decided to move to
the SmartHouse 1132CUP for all the timers
and the use of a V572AB for the RF interface.

I do think X10 will get this product fixed,
but I am hearing rumors that a new version
of the product is awaiting FCC testing.  I
just could not wait any longer and decided
to use another solution.  I have always had
great luck with their products, this one was
just not ready for primetime yet.

Thanks for the quick reply, Russ.  What
worries me is that, in your case, it will
quit working even after being attached to
your laptop after a while.

I considered just keeping the CM15a plugged
into a laptop that's operating 24/7 as a
media terminal.  Since it is a laptop, it
has a built in UPS as well as low power
consumption.  So I could keep it plugged in
all the time for the short term until the
bugs get worked out.  However, if I can't
rely on it in that configuration
temporarily, the CM15a is of little use to
me in its present condition.

I have a "mission critical" application that
I am trying to implement (i.e., irrigation
control).  I purchased the WGL Rain8II
controller to replace my existing contoller
which lacks programming flexibility. I
purchased the two way controller to have the
maximum flexibilty and assurance that it is
functional.  However, if the CM15a goes
comatose, the sprinkler program dies with it.

I truly like the AHP software, it's just too
bad the hardware doesn't seem ready yet.  So
my hands on my mouse ready to put an 1132CUP
in my shopping cart.

One thing is that you shouldn't let the
laptop go into suspend or hibernate modes.
I know some hardware doesn't get re-
initialized properly after resuming from
these modes. I don't know about the CM15A
interface but I have problems with the
VA11A being connected. I have to dis-
connect cancel Windows New Hardware Wizzard
and then re-connect the VA11A before it
will operate.

I have the same issue. But mine goes that
extra step. Anytime I restart AHP, upgrade
AHP (and therefore restarting it) or my PC
restarts I have to go through the battery
removal process. I too have somewhat critical
apps running on my system. Dog
feeder/waterer, sprinklers, etc and anytime I
have a power outage it hangs my system and I
have to either come home from a trip or have
someone else reset my cm15a. I have submitted
another post regarding this. If I get an
answer. I will update this thread.
