I've just purchased the 4 camera, wireless
kit from x10. It came with the usb video
capture adapter, motion sensors, vcr
commander, and a bunch of other goodies. If
it can do everything the description says it
can, it's a hell of a bargain considering the
quotes of $1500+ I've gotten.

Anyway, I'm in the process of opening my own
beauty salon, and need to set this system up.
I need to be able to view the camera feeds
through the internet, as I'm still in school,
and won't be at the salon much during the
weekdays. I'd also like the motion sensors to
be hooked up to record a couple minutes
everytime something moves when the salon is
closed.

So far I see that I'll need to get a TV, VCR,
a PC with a lot of HD space. Is there
anything else I would need? I've never hooked
up a system like this before. But I am a
handy man. I've built many PCs, modded
xbox's, done my own car
maintenance/upgrading, and done my own home
networks. Ths tutorials on this site don't go
into as much detail as I'd like. So if anyone
can offer tips that'd be great.

Also, forget to ask this. But where is all
the software that was suppose to come with
this stuff? Which programs will I need to be
able to take advantage of the features I need.

Multiview/Webview allows 4 camera viewing on
a PC.  Webview posts the pictures to the
internet.  You'll need a motion detector per
camera for it to work the way you want.  I
don't know much about the VCR side of things
since I want the same things as you (haven't
ordered yet - testing motion detectors with
PC first).

When you bought the kit, did it mention
multiview/webview or just XRay vision
(single camera).  Basically, everything is a
download - although they all costs $$$.
They are often included.

You can probably use the same video receiver
and your vcr commaner to run the VCR and
view on the TV.  Me, I just want the web
recording so I can se from work who's
metting with the ole casa....

Good luck!  From what I can tell X10 stuff
needs a little patience and some technical
knowhow for best results.

In the X10 Support Area. There are some
instalation instructions for many setups.
You may find somthine helpfull there. I
believe the software is a download and you
may get an email with a id code to access
the download.

Maybe you should look into getting a
consultant and getting higher end
equipment.

I've got a truckload of X10 equipment, and
waiting on other orders to come in.  It
seems the hype of the adds is just that,
with a grain of truth.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased with my
equipment in someways, but I think it is
not professional, but a good way for an
amature to learn.

I like playing with cheap electronics, then
working with more expensive electronics.  I
seriouly need security and surveilance
equipment where I live, but so far X-10
seems to not be that serious, just a
stepping stone to something else.  As
hobbiest, I'm happy with it, as someone who
needs something that works right, I'm
not.

Ok, so I've set up 2 cameras for my system.
Problem is, the image quality on one camera
is a lot better than the other, maybe since
that one has a better line of sight to the
reciever. Anyone have any tips as to getting
the image quality of the 2nd camera up? Also
When switching between cameras using the
remote, I have to press it multiple times
before the picture shows up, is there a fix
for this? I'm also wanting split screen
ability, so I can watch both cameras on the
screen at once. Is this possible? I can do
it with my cctv system at home. I'm also
desiring a 2nd monitor to watch the cameras
with, does this mean I'll need a 2nd video
reciever? If so, will having 2 conflict with
each other? Lastly, I'd like a camera right
at the downstairs main entrance of my salon,
but there is no outlet there, but there is a
light fixture which I'm not sure even works.
Could I convert that to an outlet and use
that? Would the image quality/reception be
too shabby, and unacceptable?

Had same problem still not real great but
improving as I work at moving the antennas
around I did find it all ended up adjusting
the antennas,outside and in. You may want
to relocate your cam to different spot. I
found having someone holding the cam where
I am thinking of putting it before I attach
it helps. I have six cams running and one
more to set up.. You can buy unit on x10
that splits the screen into 4 parts.
If you are setting up a second monitor just
to view one spot at all times it may be
cheaper just to buy the screen splitter
then all the other set up. I have found 5”
black and white TV’s for $20.00 on the net.
As to conflict I believe you can change the
settings on the second cam so it is
different then your original set up for
your second monitor.

PART II
The main entrance I would put a bulb in and
turn it on to see if there is power to the
socket, if there is and you have know
problem with zoning you could purchase a
screw in outlet that can handle the cam
power unit and a bulb to. HomeDepot, Don’t
forget about Zoning checking in on your
shop.
Concern, having the cam power unit plug
over head and the weight of it coming
unplugged  hitting someone in the head and
take in consideration the heat from bulb if
you put one in. You would have to come up
with some kind of plastic strap to hold the
plug unit in. You could have the socket
removed and a outlet put in with a cover
box over the power plug from your cam. This
won’t be cheap (need and electrician for
this job and you should check with your
landlord if renting first, he may pay to
have it changed over but I doubt it.

Thanks for the reply, I'll be going to home
depot to look for that screw in outlet soon
as I have time. But do you know what exactly
the screen splitter is called? I can't seem
to find it.
