Security vs Automation Conflict
« on: September 04, 2004, 06:58:44 PM »

I finally isolated the source of my X10
automation problem (being able to again use
a remote to turn lights on and off.)
It turns out that the conflict/problem comes
entirely (and only) from my X10 Protector
Plus Security System.
If the Protector Plus Security System is the
only thing NOT plugged in, everything else,
everywhere works fine.

I got the Protector Plus Security system
because I thought it was supposed to be X10
compatible and even trigger lights
attached via X10 modules (which it does)
when triggered.
Now I find I have to choose between X10 home
automation or X10 Security.  The Security
system is loosing.  I now have the
Security System plugged into a noise filter
to block it from contaminating the power
line and the automation works fine but
that disables the security system from being
able to trigger lights (including the
security light.)

Do I just have a defective Protector Plus
Security System?

Any reccomendations on how to get the
security system to be totally compatible
with X10 home automation?

DWD, I've had both running with no problems.
Are you sure you don't have something else
that may be causing this? Like an Intercom
or a battery backup? Or simply a defective
security console.

Can you use the security and the normal
automation equiptment on the same house code?
I have never tried?  I use House Code A for
Security and B Operation.

Re: So far, NiMH Batteries are working just fine

educate-batteries.htm

Q: I have not used my NiMH batteries in
several months and they are not holding
their charge. How can I fix this?

NiMH batteries will self-discharge if left
unused. Generally, within 30 to 60 days,
batteries will become completely drained.
When using them, you will need to first
recharge them. After extended storage, you
may need to condition (using the
conditioning feature on PowerEx chargers
like the MH-C204F) the batteries several
times to regain nominal performance.

Q: I plan to use the MAHA NiMH batteries as
a backup power. How long will they hold
their charge?
This is commonly referred to as the "shelf
life" of batteries. For MAHA NiMH batteries,
the shelf life at room temperature is about
70 to 90 days (for those who are a bit more
technical, take a look at the charge
retention curve). If you are seeking for
longer shelf life, you may wish to consider
alkaline or non-rechargeable lithium
batteries, which are commonly used for
memory backups.

I have isolated my Security & Automation
conflict problem further.

I had an X10 transponder on the same
electrical circuit as the DS security
system.  It appears that security system was
acting as a tuned circuit to reduce the
overall X10 signal strength on the
electrical line.  Since the Security system
acts as a transponder itself for the
monitored housecode, I moved the X10
transponder (for another housecode) to
another location (on another circuit).  This
seems to let both systems work.  BTW, I do
have most of my lights intentenally set to
the same housecode as the security system to
have them all flash.
