Linux Support?
« on: September 18, 2004, 02:28:06 PM »

Any plans for Linux?  (A much better platform
for 24x7x365 automation) --- If not, is the
USB programming protocol available for
developers?

I second that!

I won't be buying the new unit until I am
sure it will work with my Linux infrastructure.

In a promotional email it was stated "The X10
protocol for home control has been an open
standard from the very beginning." Can the
same be said about the USB comm protocols?

Thanks for your interest in X10's new
ActiveHome Pro. We don't have plans
for a Linux version or Linux development
resources at this time, but if we
(or one of our partners) offer them, we'll
be sure to let you know.

Does the new Active Home Pro support or
have plans to support Blue Tooth so that we
can activate X10 controls using Blue Tooth
on PDA's.  Or is there another PDA support
besides just the browser on the PDA?

Well, I guess I won't be buying any X10
products for the forseeable future:  No
Windows computers at home.

"We don't have plans for a Linux version or
Linux development resources"

A major business mistake there, in my
opinion, and I do know something about it.

I agree a Linux and Mac (Unix) version of this software
would a smart union of well engineered hardware with
solid reliable operating systems!

There's been some work done at decoding the
protocol to the cm15a at the usb level.  I've
integerated CM15a support into an existing
linux app, and it's been stable for well over
a month.

See homeauto.usandthem.com for details,
including a very simple demo app.  On that
site there's also a link to Neil Cherry's
stuff for the cm15a.

The stuff at homeauto uses libusb.  I've only
used it with a 2.4 kernel, but it may also
work on the mac (there's a libusb for the mac)

Without the ahp pro sw on windows, I've found
the cm15a to be quite stable, but for me most
macros are driven from linux and not stored
on the cm15a.  I do wish the RF range was
improved, as I still need to use my old
tranceivers.
