Powerhorn is not loud enough?
« on: March 29, 2007, 12:43:31 PM »

Hi,

I put one Mini Power Horn in my attic and hope when it sounds, it will draw some attention from our neighbors.  Well, I have tested it and found out the sound is not that loud.  Does it suppose to like 110db?  Why I feel it even the Controller which is 95db is louder than it?  Does that mean I got a defect item?

Please advise.

Thanks.

No. The Mini Power Horns are not louder than the PS561's built in siren.
They can barely be heard outside the house let alone alert a neighbour.

Go with some or all of... a Power Horn / phone call / outside flashing lights... if you need your neighbours to be alerted.

The Mini Power Horn itself is just good enough to wake you when you are home. Also, at best, it lets the intruder know he should seriously consider exiting now.

Thanks for your reply.  However, I remember saw some where from X10.com states that it should be sound 105db.  ???

Maybe the bigger [4 elements] PH508. It says caution 105db on its label.

This thread is dead, but I  may as well respond anyway.

Powerhorns out a very loud, very high frequency siren, the high frequency makes the wail VERY directional and (unfortunately) easily attenuated by the crap in your attic.

For the neighbors to hear the power horn needs to be outside andpointed at the neighbors house, and the neighbors must keep their windows open.

As Puck points out, the real function of the powerhorn is to let the intruder know, he has been detected.

When I tested my powerhorns (2) I when outside and listened.... I could hear them.... but I wasn't impressed.

However...... if someone did break INTO my home, they wouldn't be in my driveway listening. They would be INSIDE where the horns where loud enough to actually cause pain to MY ears.

No alarm is "fool proof". Professionals and crack addicts won't be "scared-off" by ANY alarm system.
