[INPUT REQUESTED] X10 Troubleshooting Questionaire...
« on: December 05, 2006, 08:12:45 PM »

I'm putting together a "X10 Troubleshooting Questionaire" (which will be a LOCKED post, that we can all reference, which ASKS the "proper questions") that we can point NEWBIEs with problems to so that we can get a better understanding of *BOTH* their problem(s) *AND* their experience level.

Please add your suggestions to this thread and when we all (or I ;) ) feel that it's complete, I'll move it to the LOCKED post that we can LINK to.

Thanks! :)

My First Pass:

  • 1.) How long have you been using X10 products?

  • 2.) Which Computer Interface module(s) [i.e. CM11A/CM15A] do you currently have in service? How many of each? - JimC

     - If you're experiencing a CM15A/AHP problem: - Puck
     * - What version of the software are you running?
     * - What Plug-Ins do you have installed?

  • 3.) Which Transceivers do you currently have in service? How many of each? - JimC

  • 4.) Which Transmitters (PLC and RF) do you currently have in service? How many of each? - JimC

  • 5.) Do you have a 'Capacitor / Passive Coupler / Repeater-Coupler / Other' installed across your phases? If so, which one? Why did you need it?

  • 6.) Do you have any X10 Filters installed? How many? Where? Why?

  • 7.) Do you own (and know how to use) an X10 Signal Strength Meter? Which one?

  • 8.) What is your "Electrical Expertise"?

     - Can you install a new outlet? [Bust open sheetrock, run wire, tie into existing / install new circuit breaker.]?
     - Do you own (and know how to use) a VOM/DVM?
     - Do you own (and know how to use) an oscilloscope?

  • 9.) What have you already tried? What were the results? - Puck

  • 10.) Have you mapped out your electrical circuits per Puck's Tutorial? - KDR

     - How to Map your Electrical Circuits  (courtesy of Puck)

     - MAP / MEASURE / CORRECT

  • 11.) Have you LOCATED and FILTERED your SIGNAL SUCKERS?

     - Locating and Filtering SIGNAL SUCKERS Using the ELK ESM-1 (courtesy of Jeff Volp)

  • 12.) ...MORE IDEAS HERE PLEASE... ;)

4.) Which Transmitters (PLC and RF) do you own? How many of each?

Would we also want to know how many of each of the items in 3 and 4  are in use? ???

I own many transceivers but only use one other than the CM15A.

#1 is irrelevant!
Many oldtime users of X10 know nothing about filters or phase couplers!  ::) ???Why ??? ???
Thus they have similar issues! The answers to other questions  will tell us How experienced they are!
#12: Have you made any resent upgrades? Software( version update)/Hardware(Cm11A to CM15A)
#13 Have you done an ADVANCED SEARCH on your problem!
