LM465 Issue
« on: March 13, 2007, 01:00:46 PM »

I have 4 floor lamps.  All four floor lamps use incandescent 3 way bulbs (50-100-150W).

I have 2 Lamp Modules (LM465) that I would like to control two of my floor lamps.  Both LM465 work with one floor lamp but not the other three.  One of the 3 problematic lamps is a touch-activated lamp (which my guess is that it will not work because the lamp doesn't "remember" the last state if the power is turned off/cord disconnected).  That is fine.

However, the other two floor lamps are identical lamps (not the same make/model as the previously mentioned two) and will not turn on when plugged individually through the LM465.  I have tried different outlets, different starting wattages, etc. and will not turn on with my remote.

I have tested both LM465 with the one floor lamp that does work and they work fine.  I know that the LM465 is not failing based on the success with the working floor lamp.  Any ideas on why the LM465 would work for one floor lamp and not others?  I tried searching for similar posts and didn't find any that hit on this exact issue.  If this was already covered, please direct me to the post.  Thanks.

Do either of the two problem lamps have built-in dimmers (aside from the 3-way bulbs)?  Dimmers may sometimes not be all that obvious - I have a couple of lamps with a line cord dimmer which to all external appearances is just an on/off switch, yet it provides two brightness levels with a standard single-filament incandescent bulb..  (I'm not using an X10 controller on these.)

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

No dimmers, just a turn switch that has four "clicks" - off, 50W, 100W, 150W settings.

Did you try the lamps with an LM465 in the same outlet that the the working lamp is at?

That worked!  Unfortunately, that is not the outlet that I wish to use.  Apparently the outlets in the room I DO want to use have an issue.  What could be a possible cause for one outlet/set of outlets to not work and other to be fine?  The outlets that are not working are not wired to a light switch.

You have a signal integrity issue... basically there are noise generators and/or signal suckers between the Transceiver and the LM465's.

Map / Measure / Correct

I moved my DS7000 to a new room and the floor lamp works now.  I think the culprit was that the direct line from the DS7000 to the lamp module in the problem room had a hall closet in the way.  In the hall closet is the main furnace "chimney" duct (metal) that may have not been allowing the signal to penetrate to the room.  Just a guess, but the move is a satisfactory workaround.  Thanks for the input.

The DS7000 base communicates with the LM465 over the house wiring (not RF), so the physical obstacle wouldn't have been the issue. You most likely moved the DS7000 base to a breaker circuit that has a cleaner electrical path to the LM465.

Good to hear you have it working, and thanks for the update post.
