Another tranceived house codes thread...
« on: May 20, 2007, 09:56:02 AM »

I'm having some trouble getting an XPS3 and a WS12A to respond to RF commands without using an RR501 IN ADDITION to my CM15A...

Hardware configuration:
monitored house code C, transceived house codes C and D

I have nearly 16 devices working on house code C with no problems.

I have 2 devices (the ones mentioned above) which are D1 and D2.

If I plug in an RR501 set to house code D, my RF signals to turn on & off D1 and D2 work great.  However, I feel this is a waste of a transceiver that I desperately need elsewhere in the house.  I think with my current hardware config, my CM15A should be able to receive & send out my house code D RF commands--but no dice!!  Here's a look at my activity monitor, turning D1 on & off, then D2 on & off:

Using the RF remote, with the RR501 plugged in everything works; D1 light goes on & off, D2 fan goes on & off...

OK, now with the RR501 removed, D1 light goes on but not off; D2 fan doesn't do ANYTHING...

And again, this time using the AHP interface as a controller, the situation is the same as above; D1 goes on but not off, & D2 does nothing...

Is this just a case of blocked powerline signals?  Maybe the RR501 can get the signal to the devices, but the CM15A can't?  I unplugged my CM15A and put the RR501 in the same receptacle to test that, but D1 & D2 didn't respond at all in that case.  I guess I'm just looking for confirmation that my setup is correct, and to see if I can eliminate this RR501 which is currently used ONLY for these 2 devices.  I read this thread which was pretty useful--http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?topic=11411.0.  I've got a capacitor tied in at the breaker box to tie my phases, and that solved a lot of past problems.  All of my house code C devices work fine, with an occasional finicky C2.

My first guess is that something else on the same circuit breaker that feeds D1 & D2 is either a signal sucker or a noise generator.  A device on one branch circuit can block X10 signals on that circuit without affecting the rest of the house.  You need to experiment by disconnecting everything except the D1 & D2 devices to see what happens. Keep in mind that either the D1 or D2 device itself could be the problem.  That usually shows up by ON working but not OFF.  The usual trouble makers are switching power supplies in A/V equipment and wall warts along with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

You know.... it sounds like D1 and or D2 could be noise generators. Could they be CFL's or fans?

I guess I just wrote the same thing Oldtimer wrote.

No CFLs, but D2 and two devices under house code C are fans.  I've plugged in filter modules (XPPF) to isolate my A/V, computer, and some power strips I've found to be troublesome.  I guess I should get some more & just plug everything that's not automated into them.  I didn't realize a ceiling fan might put noise on the line.

I may unplug everything on that breaker & try it just to see what happens, but if I don't get anywhere with that I guess I'll just get another transceiver.

If what you said in the last line in your post works, then good.

If not, could there be another X10 user next door (or on the same transformer. If that's the case, you two will have to determine which of the 16 housecodes each gets.

Housecodes A,B & C are the most commonly used X10 housecodes, BTW.
