Leviton HCM06 and HCM10 Off but not on
« on: May 27, 2006, 12:48:42 PM »

I recently swapped out a standard x10 three way dimmer for a Leviton HCM06 three way dimmer and companion. Both work great locally, especially the ramping and great touch/feel, but I cannot get the timer to turn the fixture on. It turns off just fine.  I can turn on/off the fixture through a remote, so I know the HCM is working that way and is receiving signals. Any ideas??  |Do I have the correct module setup in the timer? I have selected the PRO Module PRO Decorator Dimmer Switch.

Was the standard X10 3-way dimmer working before you swapped it out?

Yes, the standard dimmer was working automatically just fine, both on and off and adjusting the brightness. I was having a problem with the companion switch not turning off manually. Also, I was uncomfortable with the feel, and wanted the much preferred  touch and feel of the Levitons, which are great. THey work fine locally when I turn them on and off, but only respond to the off command from the command unit via a timed event. For some reason when the command unit sends the on command, there is no response. I have set the on command to full brightness, since the memory in the actual dimmer is set to less than full brightness.

I am having the same problems with the Leviton Switch HCM-10
The quality of this switch is superb, but it will NOT respond to a ON command in a timed event.

Anyone have a solution?

Please advise.

I had this same problem and finally tracked it down tonight.   It turns out when you use the AHP software to control Leviton devices and execute macros it sends the expected Unit On command to turn a light on.   However when a macro runs using an external trigger or timer, it instead sends a Bright 100% as the on command which the Leviton units seem to disregard if they are off.   You can see this by running the AHP software, trigger your macro externally, and then check the command history for the unit.  My solution was to add an appliance switch module (On/Off only) at the same address and in the macro send that module an On command.  The Leviton then turns on and brightens to the last dim level.

It looks like you found a work around to your problem.

For a global AHP software solution that should work; in the AHP software look at "Tools" , "Preferences" "Marco Options" and check the box "Issue "On" in place of "Bright 100%". If this box is unchecked your Marco will issue the command "Bright 100%" instead of the intended "On" command.

If you are only having this problem with macros; this is a much quicker change to make in the software preferences. Going forward you will not need to create dummy modules to get the desired outcome.

Try this out when you can and let us know your results
Cheers

The Leviton switch uses the extended X10 format to set brightness.  Some controllers, such as the Ocelot, support the extended commands, and allow you to set the Leviton to any specific brightness.  As reported, the Leviton dimmers do respond to normal X10 ON and OFF commands.

Maybe they designed it this way so it doesn't have the X10 full-on problem if given a single brighten command when off.
