KDR,
Right you are. That is why I have kept my BASIC (cheapest) telephone service.
The VOIP technology is still in it's infancy and it will be a while before it matures.
Until it does mature, I plan on keeping a land line.
As I've said in my earlier post. I'm still saving a bundle having both.
By the way I also have a cell phone and buy minutes as needed. That is because I'm retired and don't use my cell phone a whole lot.
On the other hand my son and his wife uses only cell phones.

Telular Corporation http://www.telular.com/v2/index.html makes devices that look like a land-based phone line to your equipment but connects through your cellular phone account.  Most, maybe all, of them have the cellular tranceiver built-in (they don't require a separate cell phone).  One drawback is the price.  Last time I priced one it was in the $800.00 neighborhood!

It started - for some reason - working. Only thing now is when it calls out all you hear is the alarm sound and my voice in the background. Any idea why this would happen? The alarm was not sounding when I recorded the message - wierd!

cal680 : The reason you are hearing the alarm is the system listens to the surrounding area!
Pressing "0" will silence the alarm and stop your voice message so you have an unobstructed clear listening point to your home. Without pressing "0" you can still hear any background noise if the alarm or your message doesn't drown it out!
