Motion sensor that does see animals?

I have a strange use for a motion sensor ... I'm trying to convince the cat to stay off of my persian carpet.  I'm thinking to rig a motion sensor attached to an alarm that I can set up when we're leaving the house, if the cat goes on the carpet the alarm goes off.  The cat dislikes loud noises, so I think this will be a sufficient deterrent (we have tried everything else we can think of).

Do the X10 motion sensors trigger immediately when they "see" motion?

Do any of them turn off immediately when motion is no longer seen?

Yes.

No. They generally send an OFF signal after a preset time of not detecting motion. Generally this can be set to be 1 minute and up.

I was thinking the Universal Module (UM506) could be a nice noise maker that could be used with the motion sensor. Set on momentary, with the "chime" (the chime is really a loud beep) on. It would continue to beep till the cat removes itself from the area (away from the sensor), then stop.

I once saw something similar to this Cat Stop designed for indoors.

Whatever you decide, make sure you don't set it off. If you do, you're likely to confuse your cat and defeat it's purpose. i.e. If your cat can't preform the conditioned response of leaving the area and silencing the alert, then it is likely to backfire.
