I installed the latest X10 drivers on a
system in order to test the functionality of
an X10 remote.  Since I don't actually need
the drivers on this system, I'd like to
uninstall them now.  When I attempt to do
this, however, I get the message "Could not
open INSTALL.LOG file."  I tried re-
installing the drivers, but it didn't help --
I just get the same message when trying to
unistall them.  I also tried uninstalling
them on another system and got the same
message, so this appears to be a bug in
these drivers.

To make matters worse, the
process "x10nets.exe" is now blocking other
apps from accessing my COM ports, which is
actually a problem that others have reported
on other forums.  If I end task on
x10nets.exe the COM ports once again work,
but I have to do this every time boot.

How do I uninstall these drivers?  On a
system that DOES require these drivers, how
do I prevent the file x10nets.exe from
blocking access to all my COM ports?

You are not alone. In the Software Tab here
is another thread on left over x10 stuff
when you try to uninstall. Also there are
simmilar threads in the AHP Forum Software
Tab.

So what are people doing?  Are they just
leaving the X10 drivers installed even
though they don't need them, or is there
some information somewhere that tells how to
manually uninstall these drivers?  It
bothers me to have the x10nets.exe service
running when I do NOT need any X10 devices
to work on this system (as I mentioned, I
just used this system to test an X10 device,
and now I'd like to remove the X10 drives.)

I sent a support request to x10, but I
haven't hear back yet.

I think there was a thread in one of the AHP
Area Forums on how someone did it all
manually. With out a search feature here I
have not been able to find it again.

Forgive me, but what are the "AHP Area
Forums"?

Does anyone from X10 respond here?  If
others are complaining about the same issue,
don't the X10 programmers know about this by
now, and if so, why isn't there a fix for
it?  In other words, is the problem that
nobody from X10 knows about this, or is it
that they just aren't fixing it?  It seems
like a really obvious problem.

AHP [Active Home Pro] forums are separate
from the X10 ones.
On an X10 Page click the AHP Logo and go to
an AHP Page. Pick Support and then forums. Or
www.x10.com/news/msgb/index.cgi?board=ahp-
general
There are lots of messages there.
Don't see much here or on the AHP Forums
from anyone at X10.

if you are using windows xp just use the systems restore and go back to right before you installed the drivers

So easy to do.... and so easy to forget.

I've been a computer user from the early days myself.... and can also tend to try to manually fix problems when this is no longer required.

However.... because I am mature PC user I still keep a log (notebook) with user names, passwords, and when software is installed. It helps remind me to to set "restore points" before installing new software (and some patches).
