PR511 Motion Sensor with Floodlights
« on: November 17, 2007, 02:21:46 PM »

Has anyone had any problems with the PR511. I've been playing with X10 since 1988 and have it prety much figured out. I am starting a business and am selling and installing X10. Reciently I got some PR511's and am having all sorts of problems setting them up. I am sure I am making some error in putting them up. My client is OK with my actions but I have to get him setup soon. I have a RMA to send the unit back for a new one but I would like to make sure it's not my problem,

Problems
Sometimes the unit comes on and won't go off.
When I use a control unit to turn it off It goes off. But wont come on from motion sensor for 10 - 15 minutes.
The units are setup for motion, not Dusk

I got 2 units and am having the same problems with both thats why I don't think its a Unit problem.

Anybody have any Ideas.

I use a Pro Appliance Wall Switch Module to control a  PR511, as the  PR511's internal controls are somewhat flaky. I got my  PR511 first, and trying to get it to turn on and off at set times was frustrating to say the least.  My local X10 dealer recommended the Pro Appliance Wall Switch as the best way to control the on and off times. The PR511 and and the Pro module was installed before AHP was even a gleam in the X10 programmers eye.  I used Active Home at that time.

wallofcards,

What kind of wall switch do you have the PR511 connected to and what kind of bulbs are in it?

I guess I have had good luck with my PR511's.

The only problem I find, is that the lens on the motion detector "rots" away.  I think it is not UV proof, and just ambient sun light will slowly deteriorate it.  Because of this, I have eventually had to replace mine.

I do know that there seems to be a long lag after making settings, and for the unit to become active.  It needs to settle down time or something.

One thing to remember is that start unit numbers wrap.

Bill .  The unit is connected to just a standard wall switch.  I'm not sure of the wattage of the lights.

Mainly wanted to make sure it wasn't connected through an X10 switch.  ;)

the problems you are having are common to the pr511.download manual if not done already and see troubleshooting.
Dan Lawrence pro appliance or even a regular x-10 wall switch is a good add on.
there is a very good hack to the pr511 which gives you the freedom to separate light control from motion sensor as well.
The pr511 are sensitive to ambient temperature as well like all pir's.
both units being defective is possible but unlikely.what are your settings for delay time set up for and range?Temperature is hot in your area?
when you say it comes on is it from motion or could noise be a culprit?

Start with the troubleshooting tips from manual that should help you correct and understand the problem.
good luck with your new business.
