Contact closure modules
« on: March 13, 2008, 05:47:37 PM »

What does the forum think would be best for sensing contact closure and then for actuating a device. here is the concept. i have purchased a CM15A with the AHP software as mentioned in an earlier post. Now i need to be able to send a signal to the CM15A when a set of 24vdc contacts close and then after some additional logic executes, I need to actuate a 24 dc or 120VAC device. What modules work best? I see several that look like they might work but not enough information to determine the best fit. Thanks again for all the help.

Look for info on the "Universal Module" which allows CONTROL of a separate device and the "PowerFlash Module" which allows a device to send ON/OFF signals thru the powerlines.

The PowerFlash will send an X10 signal on the powerline with a contact closure. It can be triggered by a switch closure or a low voltage signal as set by a switch. Also can be set to send an on at closure and off at open and a few others like an All Units On Off again set by a switch.

WGL makes an 8 Input device contact closure only PF8. Something like 8 PowerFlashers that only does switch closure inputs and on/off powerline signals.

For the output the Universal Module is a low voltage rated switch. I believe 24 volts AC or DC. For the 120 Volts maybe an Appliance Module; but that would switch the AC from the line to the outlet and not be an isolated contact. The Universal Modules low voltage rating if for safety as the contacts connections are open to a touch.  I believe some have used it for a higher voltage and insulated the connections. I do not endorse using it for a higher voltages.
The universal also can be set to on and off or a 1 second on pulse when an on signal is received.
SimpleHomeNet makes a heavy duty 30 Amp Switch. Is primarily an Insteon module but can be set with an X10 Address. Is for 220 volts though powered by Line one to Neutral the other line to output can be used as a dry set of contacts and has a Normally Open and Normally Closed set of contacts. No in the X10 price range though.

Thanks Ox40 and Brian H,  had looked at those modules then noticed the appliance modules and got confused as to what would work with what. Do the appliance modules not give contact closure upon receiving an X10 signal also?

Appliance Module turns on the AC line to the load outlet on the bottom of the case. If all you need is switched AC On and Off it would be fine. If you need a switch that has isolated contacts so that you can switch an independent load; then an Appliance Module will not work.
