I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that AHP needs to be running in order to run macros from the PC. The x10nets process does that. I have several macros written for OnAlert security modules, which as you know must run from the PC, and these work (as reliably as anything else in X10) when AHP is shut down.

After many frustrating hours running between sensors, switches, and the AHP activity monitor,  I've also seen that things don't always work in real-time like I think they should. Then I start tinkering -- which inevitably leads to more frustration when the "tinkers" don't behave...   I've completely given up trying to diagnose in real time with AHP running. Your thorough examination of the issues with AHP running confirms my position, so thanks for that! 
Now, if I happen to notice something not working like I think it should, I'll fire up AHP and check the activity monitor for past events. (I still have one light coming on mysteriously...)

I have upgraded to 3228 and things seem to be working properly -- at least if I don't watch too closely...

I will test you suggestion and report what I find. I had always presumed that "Run on PC" meant AHP running.  Not sure where I made that connection.  Hopefully you are correct. 


**** UPDATE **** Yep, that works.    I changed all my macros, cleared and reloaded the interface, rebooted and tested several sensors.  The only lingering problem with this is that I have a DX7000 security system and I have in the past integrated door sensors and some of the MS10A's into macros.  The only way I know of registering said sensors involves running AHP.       I just tried registering security sensors again.  No joy.

I presume that I am alone in this situation, otherwise many others would be echoing the same frustration that I have.  I suspect it is time for a complete system rebuild in hopes that my configuration problem will be resolved.

You're not alone... I've also had problems registering DS10A security sensors in AHP -- I chalked it up to an RF range issue. The same sensor in the same location sometimes registers, sometimes doesn't. Tried regenerating codes and/or installing new batteries in the sensors -- that helps sometimes. I've also replaced several DS10A sensors that are well over 6 years old, and the newer ones seem to work more reliably. (Don't know what the lifespan of these things is supposed to be, but at about $5 each on eBay, it's not too painful to replace them.)

I had CM15A RF range issues until I took the brute force approach and modified the antenna to a coax F connector and put a Radio Shack antenna in my attic.  My RF range is now at least several houses down the street.  Since that modification (a couple years ago) I have had no issues with RF range even with my problematic old brick house that has metal lathe in the plaster walls.

Nope.  The problems started when I was adding some new x10 flood lights and was modifying macros.  I saw the notice on the AHP banner that there was an update to AHP available (V3228) and allowed it to install.  Since then AHP doesn't work (as described in this thread).  Just to be sure (and it was probably due anyway) I replaced the batteries in all my sensors.  No improvement.

FWIW - Yesterday I volunteered for the beta testing that x10 had advertised here in the forum.  Much to my surprise within a few hours I got a call.  Apparently I am on the short list for being a tester.  While I had the ear of someone at x10 I described my misfortune and I believe he took some decent notes and will pass it on to some one in tech support or the like.  We shall see.

I am considering a PC upgrade.  This 2.8GHz P4 is getting a little long in the tooth for some of processing that I do.  Once I migrate everything I could rebuild this PC old timer from zero and hopefully clear the issue.  I am going to give x10 a few days to come up with some suggestions before I smoke my credit card.

Just call me baffled.

Not sure what has happend and/or changed, but now everything started working again.  All I did was the same thing I have been doing, i.e., make a AHP change, save, clear interface, download, exit AHP, and restart AHP.  Somewhere in the various iterations the AM traffic capture started working again.... and I was able to register various security motion sensors and get the macros triggered by those sensors working again.  Bizarre.  Two weeks of head scratching and some swearing and it just starts working for no apparent reason.  Go figure.
