CM17A appeared to stop working; replacement also doesn't work.
« on: September 14, 2008, 10:29:21 PM »

I have a TM751 receiver, and HR12A and KR19A transmitters that have been working fine for over a year.

I have a CM17A plugged in to a Linux server in my basement, that had also been working fine for the same period.
Recently the CM17A appeared to stop working. Nothing changed that I am aware of. To test, I:

- I moved the TM751 to within a few feet of the CM17A.
- Disconnected & reconnected both the CM17A & TM751 with the vague notion of "resetting" them.
- Changed the house code on the TM751, and changed it back.
- Tried the CM17A in 2 other computers.

No love. So I decided the CM17A was dead, and ordered a new one. The new one doesn't work either.

I'm guessing the chances of having one die, and to receive a DOA replacement are incredibly small. I can't *prove* the replacement is DOA, so on principle, I have a hard time trying to return it as defective.

The only other possibility is that the CM17As are broadcasting at an ever-so-slightly-out-of-spec frequency, to which my TM751 was once, but is no longer, sensitive.

Should I just seek replacement of the CM17A, even though I can't prove it's DOA?
Is it likely that a 3rd one won't work either?
Could I be missing something else? Remember, my HR12A and KR19A transmitters work fine, so the TM751 receiver is good.

Any opinions welcomed and appreciated.

Just for the record, the CM17A has been discontinued by X10 USA.

The CM17A is not listed in the X10 web catalog alone. I still see the CK18A Firecracker Kit that has the CM17A as part of it; but maybe you did see it as I have seen conflicts between pages of the sales site.  :'

The CM17A is a serial driven device and gets its power from the serial port. Have you tried anything else in the Serial Port to see if it died as two CM17As don't work in it.
