x10 signal endlessly repeats - can't find cause
« on: October 15, 2008, 03:38:43 PM »

An all-off signal for a specific house code is repeating non-stop. I have unplugged all controllers, receivers, boosters, and filters. The signal continues to repeat (preventing other signals from getting through). I do have a wide array of wall switches from several manufacturers, but none of them can send an "all off" signal (that I know of). I have no new appliances or electronic devices to cause a fake signal suddenly. The Intellatest module keeps repeating the same code. I don't have a signal strength meter, so I can't track it down that way.

Any idea what could cause a repeated signal like this?

madmartian,

Since you've unplugged your transceivers and controllers you've eliminated the "stuck button" cause as a possibility.

If all of your remaining devices are receive only you're left with two possibilities:
  • The signal is being generated externally - possible but unlikely
  • Your Intellatest module has a fault (or the TW523 interface that it's connected to)

If you have a lamp module, try setting it to the same housecode as the reported "ALL-Off" signal.  This should verify whether the signal is real.  Unplug the TW523 interface to determine if it's the culprit.

If the above doesn't correct the issue, and you have NO transmitters installed (that includes active repeaters at your panel), you may have a neighbor on the same transformer generating the code.  As I said, unlikely.

Let us know what you find,

Interesting... I have read of a repeating issue with a WGL device (W800RF32 family of RF receivers?) on certain house codes. I don't know if your using a 3rd party whole house all code transceiver.. or irrigation hardware. could that be a part of your setup?

I have an Activehome Pro and a Stanley all house code receiver, but both are unplugged. I have narrowed the problem down to 3 rooms. Strange thing is I have unplugged all x10 devices except for the wall switches. I have manually turned off the two X10 wall switches by flipping the lower switch to the left. I turned off the Leviton switch manually by pulling out the little switch. Still getting the signal. Note that the problem was first noticed when I tried to turn on a light and it immediately turned off. This has now happened on two seperate x10 wall switches, neither in the troubled area but both on the same house code. However, most of the time the repeating signal does NOT turn anything off. Strange!

Well, um, I solved the problem, but not without a little embarrassment. I had narrowed it down to three rooms by flipping circuit breakers. Before going to the length of detaching the wires from the wall switches, I started unplugging everything. I first shut off powerblocks near the computer and narrowed it down to one power block. Then to one plug. Then I followed the plug to... a controller sitting underneath a pile of crap! The controller has been under the pile of crap for so long that I didn't know it was there. The pile got larger over time, and eventually the "All Units Off" button was held down. Silly me. Yah, I know, what mom used to say... CLEAN YOUR ROOM!!!

You are not the first one to find a buried or forgotten controller or remote. So you are not alone.
