Have a question in regards to wire sizing.  I was once told that if it took a piece of wire, 18/2, and I took the two strands of the 18 guage wire and wrapped them together I would come up with a wire size of approximately 9.  Obviously there would be no ground wire left.  Recently I have been told I was wrong, any ideas or thoughts on this.

Just google "America Wire Gauge" and you should be able to find a chart that shows the cir. mil. for each each wire gauge.. So, find the cir. mil. for 18 ga., then multiple it times 2 (as your using both wires). then find the corresponding ga. that comes closest to the sum you just calculated.. That will be the "equivalent" ga.
