Wiring WS12a wall switches
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:28:56 PM »

I have some WS12a 3 way dimmer switches and and the instructions show what to so with three wires on your existing switches but my switches have four wires (one solid copper) that I assumed is a ground but have nowhere to connect it too and am just wondering exactly how to hook them up I already blew one switch trynig and don't want to do it again. ANd also they didn't send me a companion switch with it, do I really need that or can I just use the existing switch on the other side?

Three wires on the original switch? So the old switches are in a three way setup.

Does the original switch have a Pilot Light on it?

Do you also have the needed WS14A Companion switches needed to do a multi-switch setup?

I would also say the bare copper wire is the Ground wire that X10 doesn't use. Some here have screwed it to the switch box or under one of the switches mounting screws.

No the OLD switches have 4 wires one is a solid copper ground wire that I suppose you right and i could just hook it up to metal switch casing somehow, but yes they are in a three way swithc setup and no i don't have the companion switch, do I have to have it? I was just going to use the normal switch on the other side as I didn't really see a difference. I'm not sure what a pilot light is but the way everything is set up now is 2 switches control living room lights each with four wires top right (white) bottom right (black) top left (red) bottom left (solid copper) and the x10 switch has black red and blue. I'll go ahead and order the companion switch and then I assume the blue goes to hot nad the other 2 go to traveller wires. Thanks for your reply I really appreciate it.
