xps3 red light not off?
« on: November 15, 2010, 11:30:46 PM »

i installed an xps3 yesterday upstairs and it went perfect, red light turns on when switched on, when off its off.

today i installed another xps3, but this time when its off the red light is still dimly on. When its on its bright red how it should but off its still on but dimly.

did i do something wrong? the only difference between both installs is that the neutral wires for the first install were 2 white wires grouped together, the second install there was 4 neutral wires grouped together and i put them all in the switch. should i have done that? do i just need one wire from that bundle instead of all 4 in there? i put them all in because im thinking this still need continuity between all the neutrals. help please

It is possible with all four stuffed into the two Neutral terminals. You have a poor connection.
You are correct that all four still have to be tied together.
Maybe leaving all four bundled and adding a white pigtale to the bundle and neutral terminal of the XPS3 maybe better.

Since we have a few electricians here. You may get a more experienced fix.

Is this the first XPS3 where the red indicator is glowing dimly you have? I know there is another thread with dim leds reported. Maybe X10 and X10Pro have done another revision.

I installed one upstairs and it was fine. Works how it should.

I tried it bundled up and running a seperate wire from the group of neutrals. Still the same.

Tried another xps3 and still the same. Im thinking of taking off the one upstairs that i know works and outting it where i have the problem, but for some reawon i dont thinks its going to work.

Am i missing something? I mean the switch works its just the red light is dimly lit

Like Brian said "Maybe X10 did another revision".

This is an unfair judgement on my part since I really don't know, but I invision X10 manfacturing making parts substitutions "on the fly". By this I mean: "Oh we are out of the 1200 ohm resistors? Then use the 1000 ohm resistors until we get the 1200 back in stock".

Like Brian also mention, your dim glow is not the first time this has been on the forum.

I would troubleshoot it by substituting one of the normal acting XPS in this wall box. If it glows dim also, then you know it has something to do the the wiring in the box, or the load attached to the switch.

In either case, I don't think it is a "problem" like safety issue, etc. but understanding, it would be nice if all worked the same.

Well if it doesnt cost ill effects it wont bother me so much, but i will install the good xps3 to verify its just an unrevisioned xps3 and not some sort of leakage

Ill probably still use them as long as they work how they should with the x10 controller and ahp i get today. just put them in bedrooms and not main rooms

Thanks for taking the time to test. I know us "oldies" on the forum are interested in what you find out.

I have a Date Code: 04L51 XPS3.

I was able to get the red indicator to glow dimly. By putting a 1 Meg resistor between the Line and Load terminals, but that was only if the load was not on the switch. Any bulb I tried turned off the dim indicator. In mine it looks like a neon bulb not a true LED.

I am thinking some low level leakage or a redesign of the module. Neon bulbs don't take much leakage current to start glowing.

I would also be interested with your findings. Maybe the Date Codes if you can see differences between them.

OK. If you ever try it just pass on the results.

On mine from 2004. It is a small round white sticker. On the top side of the case. Near the top mounting flange. May have to pull it out of the switch box to see it.
