Changing 2 way to 3 way
« on: August 08, 2009, 03:23:08 PM »

I have 2 lights in my kitchen.  For some dumb reason when they wired it they put each light on it's own seperate switch.  Trying to avoid having to get into the attic given that the outside temp is going to be close to the 100's over the next few weeks.

if I put in some XPS3 switches, is it possible to turn them into 3 ways?  What I want to do is have both go on with either switch is turned on, and off with either.  Obviously it would be better to run true 3 way and I might do that over the winter.

Or can this be done with macro's & AHP?  Or would I need to use a motion sensor to detect the light and have that trigger the macro?

Thanks again guys!

1. No
The XPS3 can be a conventional 3-way with addition of a "companion" switch, but that isn't what you are describing.
2. Yes
AHP will do this, but not with XPS3s by themselves, as they do not transmit status. AHP wouldnot know they have been toggled.  You could use the SPS3s along with X10 Slimline switches (and a tranceiver) and let AHP turn off the other light.

Or You could use a "Switchlinc" wall switch that transmits status when manually toggled. The status change is what tells AHP to turn ON or OFF the opposite light. Or you could use two  "KeyPadLincs". Both the xxxxlinc switches are Smarthome products available from Smarthome.com.

Sorry, you cannot convert a XPS3 to a 3-way.  Since each light is on a separate switch now, you can install 2 XPS3 switches, one in place of each current switch and give both the same address.  That way, AHP can turn on both at the same time, so a timer or macro would work.

As always, thanks guys.

I think what I'm going to do is run a wire from light 1 to light 2 on switch 1, then put an outside light in on the same wall as switch 2 and run it's wire to that.  Didn't think I would be able to do this as simply as what I thought I would, but I'll look into the switchlinc as well.  Had a guy in town offer to sell me his from when he had it setup pretty cheap here in town.
