set alarm w/window open
« on: September 13, 2009, 10:05:52 AM »

Hi everyone, new here, and considering getting an X-10 security system for my house.  First, a few questions.   Will the system work if I choose to keep a bedroom window slightly open when sleeping.  Can that window be by-passed somehow.  Also, I've read here that some have removed the magnet from a sensor and imbedded it in the door frame.  Does this make the system less effective?

Thanks, sara

Your problem is a common one... and it has a simple fix too. Buy a system that has plenty of door/window sensors (DS10A). Use the magnet from one of the extra sensors and mount two magnets on your bedroom window. One magnet will be set to line up with the sensors reed switch with the window closed.... the other magnet will be positioned to align with the sensors reed switch with the window slightly open (for sleeping).

I would also suggest (if your window doesn't lock in your slightly open position) you use a [stick] small wooden round dowel from the hardware store. Paint or stain it to match your window frame. Cut the stick so it will make opening the window from the outside more difficult... but allow for the height of the slightly open position.

I should mention there are locks that will do a better job than the stick (also at your hardware or building supply stores). But the idea remains the same. Don't just depend on the alarm... while in the open position... still provide a lock to prevent complete opening from the outside.

I think the extra magnet will work for what I need.  I do use a dowel in the window, plus my dog sleeps in the room and alerts to noise.

One more question, do you know the size of the sensors?  1/2" wide?

Thanks, sara

Yeah... or a fraction under 1/2. And about 2 1/8" long.
