Dimming on/up
« on: December 11, 2009, 10:40:55 PM »

This is probably an old problem, but I just realized it.

I want to be able to dim up, not just full on then dim down

how to remedy this?

What you are seeing is the way the X10 modules where designed.
The function is part of the firmware in the module.
I tried it with both a soft start and older Lamp Module and a dim up always starts at 100%  from an Off state. As does the LM14A Two Way Module.
There is no way to dim up from zero with a remote or controller from an Off state.

Do your modules ramp up and down when turned on and off; With the soft start feature?

Do you have AHP and a CM15A Interface?
There maybe a clever way to do a dim up from zero that I am not aware of though software. With the soft start versions.

Actually, that isn't quite true.  My daughter just did that for the Christmas tree a few minutes ago.  I have one house/unit code that drives things like the curio cabinet lights that we only run at about 70% brightness.  We also put the holiday lighting on that code.

At the end of the evening, the controller ramps those lights down to max dimness.  So, to turn them back on with the remote, we just hit "6 ON", followed by several BRIGHT pulses.  Obviously, at dusk, the controller does that automatically.

Sounds like dimming to minimum; then going from there and not off. Is the answer to allow dimming up from minimum brightness.

I tried it. Dim to minimum and never turn directly off. When the on command is sent it stays at minimum and will brighten up. From 0% with my older LM and 30% for the soft start ones.

New soft start Lamp Modules modules will not dim to 0% with my remote directly. Can you dim them to 0% with software?

You might try an extended on command to start at 1percent then dim up from there. not sure how you intend to use, but i think it works with a macro

I figured out what it takes.

Most of my lamp modules are soft start.

When you light is on, dim it all the way down, then click it off.

From there when you hit bright it will work the way i want it.

EDIT:   With my old radio shack plug n power modules they will dim all the way to off, not like the soft starts how there is still some light left. Although the old modules won't slowly brighten using the same technique.
