If I reuse it, it will be in a much more accessible place than the foyer ledge 

That is where I had the one that failed too.  Our foyer ledge is only accessable with an extension ladder perched on the staircase leading to the lower level.  Not wanting to do THAT again, I replaced it with an in-the-wall relay switch.
