basic rf signal problem
« on: January 18, 2010, 01:25:44 AM »

I am using the very basic wireless motion system. An Eagle Eye motion sensor outdoor (MS14A), remote chime SC546A and Transceiver Module TM751. I have been using for 3-4 years. Now, it does not work. The cable company put in new amplifiers (inside/outside). I removed the inside amplifier, but it did not correct the problem. I did read where it was recommended to remove the outside amplifier to check that, but what if
it is the outside amplifier? How do I solve my problem. Also, I can take the same units and place on other plugs and it works inside but not when I take motion sensor outside of house. All help would be appreciated. thanks

Cable companies amplifiers?
Please give more details on exactly what they are and do.

I am thinking they maybe causing power line signal problems from the TM751 to the SC546A.
X10 RF signals are at 310MHz. I don't know if that frequency is used by cable companies.

My cable company is constantly changing things and I feel eventually even us basic users are going to need a converter box. They want to go all digital and drop analog RF.

Amplifier is cable company's COX and they went digital
Anoter question is a motion senor similar to the Eagle Eye with a greater detection distance? The Eagle eye is 20 ft.
I would like the same setup, but with greater distance than 20 ft

Thanks for the added data. It will assist in finding some solutions.

I am not familiar with how the outside interface gets power. If it was AC you maybe able to filter it, but my gut says the power is on the coax feed from the street tap or on the coax between the inside and outside unit.

Motion Sensor Distance. Are you trying to detect objects farther away or having problems with the sensors RF signals getting back to the transceiver. What the motion sensor is mounted on and what is in between the sensor and the transceiver can play a great roll in distance.

If it is an RF distance problem. You maybe able to try a different location for the TM751 or maybe get a transceiver that has more range. I also have seen the new design TM751 has a much better reception distance than the older ones.

two separate issues:
1. Was the first issue with the WIRELESS components, the transceiver module TM751, remote chime SC546A, and the EagleEye motion sensor.
I had the motion sensor above my garage door (outside), the TM741 and chime inside and everything was working great for 3-4 years. After
Cable company came and replaced the amplifiers (but the cable company had gone digital way before things quite working) it would not
work anymore. I could hear the click on the TM751, but the chime would not work.

2. I was asking about the sensor, because it states 20 ft for distance, however before my problem I was picking up motion 45 ft away. That is
why asked about new motion sensor.

1) The Motion Sensor must be on Unit 1 as the TM751 is still receiving the RF signal and going on and off. That narrows the field down to the power line. It sounds like the TM751 power line signal is not getting to the SC546A. As a test can you move the SC546A to a different area of the house and try it. You maybe right. The new cable equipment maybe making noise or signal sucking.

2) I have not done much with motion sensors, but I expect you will be getting tips from other here that have them.

If you hear the TM751 click but SC546 doesn't chime, Brian H is correct when he says that narrows it to power line. You said you took one of the amps out of service with no effect on the problem. Do the amps plug in? If so unplug them both and see if the chime starts working.

As far as motion sensor detection range. It is what it is. Make sure the fresnel lense is clean and not yellowed from the sun. Other than that, I don't think there is any improvement.

I believe the problem is solved. I moved the TM 751 back to it's original plug, which is as close to the outside sensor as I can get,
then I plug the chime into a plug close to internet/TV cable and it works. By the way the sensor picks up motion from 40-45 feet.
Back in business. Thaks for all the help.
