are appliance modules the same internally?
uk appliance modules are £20+ which is not cheap compared with what you yanks pay, about $10 for the same.

can i buy a load of usa models and do some soldering???

No the US ones have different power supply components for 120 VAC while yours are 240 VAC.
Line Input pins and Output Outlet are different but you know that part already.
There are hacks to convert 120 Volt Units to 240 Volt ones.
I have not seen any for the latest CFL friendly ones with the surface mounted controller IC.
Basically you half the value of a few capacitors while doubling their voltage rating.
Doubling the value of a resistor and four times the wattage {memory on wattage }
Raising the voltage rating of the MOV across the Line for spike suppression.

    bugger, still very expensive in the uk but so is time and not about to de solder a million pionts and hope to solder new ones in the right way round again and again.
