Well my wife to be (getting married Feb 26, 2011) and I have gotten our new home FINALLY. It was a short sale but the house was well worth it. Anyway I think I would like to do some home automation stuff. Nothing really big yet but just some little stuff. Now I always thought it would be cool to do home automation but what brought it on more was all the dimmer switches I noticed already in the home. Also there is a 10 year old touch screen digital thermostat which is also kind of cool but if I could update it to something newer and possibly accessible online, well that would be way cooler. So I am sure this question has been beaten like a dead horse  but what would a noob like me, armed with a new home, need to get started in home automation? I do have a Dell PowerEdge 1750 I just hooked up with for $50 if I will need that for this project. Any help in getting started in home automation would be greatly appreciated.

You don't want to limit your self Just for a couple of bucks.
Get the ActiveHome Pro (CM15A module not the CM19A) with all plug-ins deal. This will keep your options wide open!
Get couple of light and appliance modules to start.
You can always add more + cameras and any thing else you may need.
Read the forums here to see what obstacles you may run into so your prepaired!
There other things you will need down the road but this will get you started!
The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!
