Don't Keep using the Hardware Configuration for a long time.

Caution (I use 3.306, but this probably is good for any version of AHP) when using the Hardware Configuration for a long time when timers/macros are going to run, it will prevent them running.

That explains a lot :)-

I couldn't  figure out why my macro wouldn't work properly until I realized AHP was open on my computer.

I don't think it is having AHP open, as much as it is having the Hardware configuration window open. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I remember hearing that opening that window "grabs" the CM15A in a way that has priority over running other commands.
closing that window should let you resume normal operations.

Many have AHP running 24/7 for the smart macros and other plug ins.
I would agree with Noam. Hardware Configuration may grab the CM15A as you try to change configuration.
