Updating Timers and Macros crashed AHP
« on: September 15, 2011, 11:25:23 AM »

Hey all, I've got a whopper here...

I am running the latest AHP with several plugins installed.  Timers, macros, wireless Nightwatch cams, Powerhouse security system, all kinds of good stuff.  I run it on a dedicated PC.  I also only check it every few days (or whenever the damn AHP software crashes, which is once every week or two).  Last time I checked it, I tried to update timers and macros, and AHP crashed.  I realized that AHP couldn't talk to the CM-15A anymore, because it not only wouldn't update, but I couldn't control anything manually through the PC.  Unless the command was already stored in the CM15's memory, nothing was happening since no commands would make it through from the PC to the power lines.
I tried:  Uninstall/reinstall of both old and new versions, with and without the plugins.  Start a new ahx file.  Windows system restore to a month back.  Different USB cord (plugged right into pc, not a hub), even a different CM15.  Reinstalled every driver I could find.  Running on a Win XP box that is (other than x10 issues) stable and reliable.
For a long time, it even said the CM15 memory was full.  Then, after some combination of installing or swearing, it sees the CM15 and an accurate read of memory used.  But, it still won't pass commands through the thing to my powerlines.  My cameras and macros work, even my e-mail alert when the system is armed.  This seems like some sort of incompatibility between my PC and CM15, but this is a totally new glitch and after all the wiping and reinstalling, I don't see where the problem is.
I just can't take this anymore.  It seems like every few weeks I have to go reload or reprogram something.  I'd set fire to all this crap and start over with Insteon RF and Homeseer if I could afford to, but I'm stuck with this until I get a better job or win the Powerball.  Anyone have a copy of Homeseer they want to sell me?  Argh!!!

Re: Updating Timers and Macros crashed AHP- update
« Reply #1 on: September 15, 2011, 11:41:22 AM »

Just installed on an old laptop, and everything runs.  So, it's not a broken CM15, bad cable, etc.  It's software.  Any idea what could have happened to dork up the interface like that?  Formatting and reloading Windows that Activehome is installed on isn't an option; I just can't take that PC out of service and reinstall everything.  This leaves me with working through the problem or running everything on a crappy old laptop that isn't powerful enough to handle it.
Oh well, thanks for your thoughts and prayers....

Just to clarify, you are running version 3.316, right?
I know you said you tried a different CM15A, but did you try doing a full reset on the first one (unplug USB and power, remove batteries, wait a few minutes, put it all back together, and download again)?

Yeah, I did the full reset on both of them, and they both work OK on the old laptop.  Running 3.316 on both computers.  Not sure what else to do other than update timers and macros using the old pc and send the ahx file over the network to the other one to stay synchronized.  It's just that the old laptop can't handle the video stuff very well.  I think that the desktop PC still handles video and macros.  I'll be doing some testing later to see what I can cobble together... Also running a full Windows update as we speak to hopefully update and fix and dll and driver issues...

Maybe using a third party Uninstaller? Followed by a search of the Registry (RegClean.exe, CCleaner.exe, etc.) for anything that sounds like X10, AHP, ActiveHomePro...etc. etc. etc.

A few more things you can try:
1. Roll back the CM15A driver in Device Manager (if an older one is available)
2. Unplug all other USB devices (if you can - you would need a keyboard and mouse still)
3. Try a different USB port on the PC

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  I ran Ccleaner and am just rebooting after a full-on Windows update.
I also just tried rolling back the CM15 driver as per your suggestions.  I've already tried a different USB port and don't have any other USB devices other than a keyboard.  I have AHP up and running on my crappy old laptop, but it's pretty much pegged as far as resources go now.  I tried checking the still pictures options because I want to see if I can send pics to a network drive for storage, but AHP keeps crashing when I click on the tab.  Ugh, the hits keep on coming.
Still, thanks for the tips, I'll keep you informed after I try some of these fixes tonight!

Grateful for the help,
Ryan

Well, I give up.  Thanks for all the tips, but short of completely wiping and starting over on the computer, I can't see what will work.  Since that PC has a more important use than Activehome, I brought out my old laptop and have AHP running on that now.  I have to view and delete pictures via my network connection, but it's do-able...
Thanks again all!
