But, I have customers controlling X10 devices with runs of 500 feet or more.  One has two houses sharing the same utility transformer.
And remember, noise can travel in from outside your house too, and be really hard to locate. (as many people here have already heard my story of the failing CFL at the house across the street from mine that shut down my whole system, I won't repeat it here ;-))

Been think'n - what we need to do is marry X10 with IP over power.
I had expected HomePlug Command & Control to do just that but this initiative seems dead in the water after deciding on the silicon a couple of years ago.

Essentially, it's a subset of the HomePlug Broadband over Powerline protocols. It uses frequency hopping to avoid noise and would seem to solve most of the problems discussed in threads like this one. I'm surprised that it seems to have been stillborn.

Still OS ... above I mentioned the PicoTux 100 - try raspberrypi  $25, USB only from what I can tell ....
