Looks like a lot of other people have issues with the cloud.

You're FAR from being the only person afraid of the Internet. Technophobia is pretty darn common now-a-days.... particularly among us seniors.

No it isn't as popular as The fear of spiders, or Ophidiophobia, Agoraphobia, Cynophobia or the most common of the phobia's.... public speaking. But it's still big. Modern day Luddites are everywhere. Like all phobia's.... you can get help, or just use a little self-help, or just learn to tolerate the inconvenience and/or discomfort of not being able to go where you wish and do what you want to do.

But for people NOT afraid of climbing ladders (Acrophobia).... telling them scary stories about falling (or posting links).... isn't going to alter their tolerance to the phobia. The same can be said of Technophobia. These are internal, emotionally generated feelings. They are NOT data driven conditions.

But you already know that.

Wow! You no longer even bother to read the articles I reference before launching yet another personal attack.

Not that it will matter but the article was mostly about applications where the time it takes to transmit data to the cloud, process it and transmit the results back to the origin of the data is problematic. And about how the massive amount of data anticipated from IoT devices will further clog the pipelines. They are moving the processing to local routers and/or to the IoT devices themselves.

There's even RPi like hardware that allows technophobic Luddites like me to create their own routers that can tie all their ancient vacuum tube based devices (e.g. ESP8266) together in a local network.

Get with the times old man.  The fog is where it's at!  The cloud has reached middle age at 2yo and is about ready to retire.

The fog is the next advancement not a step backwards HA Dave.
Having issues with the cloud doesn't mean your afraid of the Internet! ::) :'
I have lots of issues with the cloud and there are some things I refuse to use it for.
Do I have a Phobia? Maybe but don't think it is Technophobia!

The Fog sounds like something Authinx may be attempting with there new linked cameras though I'm just starting to play with one.
And they need work if this is the route they're leaning towards.

None of this matters any longer. With Apples new 7 iPhone... Apple also introduced iOS 10.... which includes home automation. There is a bunch of compatible devices and interfaces (see homekit). Many devices no longer require anything but a router connection. I immediately ordered ihome devices and set them up.

Even with the TV on at loud volume I can command Siri to turn lights on or off. Or yell across the house if its after bedtime and all is quite. I can control them from anywhere (even using the touchpad)... the same as I can my smart garage door. So I can take deliveries or allow in service people or friends.

I set-up on-line "rules" (called robots)... so the automation operates smartly (from the Web). Turning on/off lights based on conditions.

You can debate and ponder from now till doomsday. But in reference to Home Automation.... it made (past tense) no difference. Apple resolved the issues. Homekit is now the standard and will likely remain so... at least till after Christmas.
