phase coupling issues
« on: May 13, 2013, 08:20:09 PM »

well, I'm still trying to figure out this problem. on my system I istalled a phase couling to address the signal issue and still the units on my opposing pase are not responding right. when I use my AHP program, most of the units on the same leg as the interface work, and on the oppsing leg, only a few items respond. I have several SR277 in my home and the ones in the bedroom work fine when I use the handheld remote but wont respond the the AHP interface... the same thing with my china cabinet light... the unit will work with the remote, but the interface wont activate it... I install a phase coupler, that doesnt seem to do anything... the results are the same... I moved the interface to another computer and the results are the same... what do I need to look at when trouble shooting? what is recommended for solving this issue.... I also have a PLC unit tied into my A/C condenser from Idaho Power for remotely controlling my A/C in the summer... (Power Company Controlled) could that be causing any problems? do I need to buy a signal strength meter?   the home is less then 1500 s/f.... any suggestions here???   John

What model and manufacturer phase coupler did you install?
You may still have some signal suckers and noise makers in the home. If the phase coupler you installed is a passive type, that just passes what signal is left on one phase to the other. Along with noise. The signals may still be effected.

Is the remote using the CM15A for its sending X10 power line signals or do you have another transceiver in a different part of the house?

Some smart meters have been known to cause X10 problems. Can you look at the meter and see a model number?

thank you, I'll check the meter. as for the signal, I have several transcievers in the house, all assigned to each area. the codes in use are, B,G, K, L, and  O. the outside ligghts work fine, and all the codes respond to the CM 15. the only problem is with one of the super sockets... it won't respond to the cm15 at all, but will respond to the transceiver commands. when I use the remote, the unit works fine. should I get a repeater? or does the system just need a good noise filter. all my lights are CFL's and only the bedroom lights and the chandeleir have regular bulbs. the china cabinet has a 25 watt bulb in it... amybe I should change out the super socket...   the CH15 seems to be working just fine, its just not repeating the outgoing signal to that 1 unit... the coupler I have is the XPCP and it is new.

It does sound like you have signal issues.
You may want to check out some of the troubleshooting tips here:
http://jvde.us/x10_troubleshooting.htm
http://www.act-remote.com/PCC/uncle.htm
http://www.davehouston.net/

You may want to try disconnecting electronic devices on the circuit where the one unit does not respond first.

Not sure if getting a few filters for troublesome devices or a repeater coupler would be the answer.

should I get a repeater? or does the system just need a good noise filter.
It sounds like you have a large system. I would try and locate your noise source with the troubleshooting links Brian posted. The problem is; in todays world you probably have a dozen noise makers, so one single filter may not fix the problem.  A high output repeater like the XTBIIR might not need any additional filtering because can boost the X10 signal above the noise level. I would not bother with an X10 brand repeater like the XPCR. The ACT (Home Pro) CR234 is also a good repeater, but the XTBIIR edges it out with regard to repeater output. $0.02
