Motion Detect Recording Without Open Preview

I have managed to configure automatic recording when motion is detected. However, I have noticed that the automatic detection only works when I am actively viewing the camera in my browser. If I don't leave the window open, then it stops recording automatically. This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that I have very high CPU usage when leaving the browser preview open. Is this a firmware problem, or is this just a result of poor built in software that can't function independently?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
