I've been successfully running ActiveHome Pro with basic functionality.. Lights on/off , group lights on/off and Good night/Good morning timers that turn on and dim and off selected lamps.
Now I really want to set up a vacation routine that will turn on, dim, turn off lamps randomly between say 7:00PMish and  2:00AMish.
Can someone lead me in the right direction or to a resource that might walk me through it?

Which version of AHP are you running?
Do you have SmartMacros plugin?
You can look at the X10 wiki for AHP
If you have smart macros check the link there for it as well.
You can also check the Smartmacros section in the forum here for Ideas and help

I am running 3.318 and I DO have Smart Marcos. Is Smart Macros the preferred way of doing this?

It really depends on what exactly you wish to do.

You can create new holiday called vacation where you set the time frame (date of year) from-to for a timer to run
Then create timers for each module you wish to run during this holiday.

Creating a Smart macro will enable you to run a 4 hour macro triggered by a timer the macro can include several modules.

You may wish to combine a smartmacro with a timer set to a vacation time frame/

My plan is to:

Beginning at +- 6:00PM
Turn on A1
Turn on L2
Wait +- 60 minutes

Turn off L2
Turn on L3 Dim 50%
Dim A1 65%
Turn on A3
Turn on A4
Wait +- 60 minutes

Dim L1 50%
Dim A3 50%
Dim A4 50%
Wait +- 90 minutes

Turn on C1
Wait +- 60 Minutes

Turn on D1
Turn off C1
Wait +- 60 minutes

Turn off D1
Wait +- 45 minutes

Turn on B1

At +- 1:30AM Run "Good Night" Macro (A8)

Rerun this every day beginning at +- 6:00PM

You will need 3 macros
macro 1:
 turns on A6 and L2
Wait +- 60 minutes
Turn off L2
Turn on L3 Dim 50%
Dim A1 65%
Turn on A3
Turn on A4
Wait +- 60 minutes
Dim L1 50%
Dim A3 50%
Dim A4 50%
Wait +- 90 minutes

Turn on C1
Wait +- 60 Minutes (this may need to be changed to 59:55 minutes to allow next step)
Turn on next macro

Macro 2:
Turn on C1
Wait +- 60 Minutes
Turn on D1
Turn off C1
Wait +- 60 minutes

Turn off D1
Wait +- 45 minutes

Turn on B1


Macro 3:
At +- 1:30AM Run "Good Night" Macro (A8)



I had stated before a macro will run for 4 hours but in fact it is 4 and a half hours
A 6:00  you have a total of 6 hours and 15 mins of delays.
If you wish this to be a vacation sequence  so it only runs between 2 given dates you'll also need to go to tools/preferences
check "Use Holidays in timers" then click Edit and create a vacation holiday.

I've created the macros as you suggested

In an effort to learn...
I'm wondering why I needed to break the string into multiple macros. Is there a limitation in the macro function? Is the limitation the 4 and a half hours you spoke of? If the total macro wait time is less the 4.5 hours could I put everything on one macro?

What is the best way to string the three macros I created together and launch?

If the delays were under the 4.5 hour time limit you could narrow it down to one macro.
You can't string the good night macro with the others, as you wish it to start at a different time.
You can create phantom modules for each macros trigger then use a timer to run them which only runs for your vacation time frame
