This could be big
« on: February 24, 2016, 03:27:43 PM »

Some folks have found a way to reduce the power needed for WiFi to miniscule levels. More or less they are doing what I did here...
https://www.laser.com/dhouston/X10_feng_shui.html although I didn't reduce the power wasted by X10.

In this instance it probably means zillions of ultra-low power WiFi-enabled IoT thingys.

And they won't need PLC with its attendant noise issues.

I don't quite understand how they are generating the packets from the passive device, but it sounds as though it basically makes a low power packet generator (e.g., a sensor sending an MQTT packet) possible without using any significant power over what the sensor itself needs.  It apparently works with existing devices on the receiving end, but I'm not clear what needs to happen to make new devices that are ultra low power.  Or, does it simply take a software update to the existing device to utilize the new scheme.

Either way, interesting topic.

Smoke and mirrors.

No, no, no!

Smoke = coal-fired power plants
Mirrors = solar arrays

I can see the glow from Seattle on the horizon.  If this were really that big a breakthrough, I should see all this smoke rising in the distance!
