X10 transceiver PAT03 vs RR501
« on: May 04, 2016, 10:53:42 AM »

Hello I already own a TM751 but I am interested in either the RR501 or the
PAT03 but I am not clear on the differences between these two units.

Why would I choose one vs the other?

Thank you,

The X10Pro PAT03 is a redesigned PAT01 and is reported to have a better electronics in it.

I don't believe the RR501 that was the X10 version of the PAT01 has updated electronics.

The X10Pro line use to have a better warranty and QC tests. I don't know if that is still true.

I personally would get the PAT03. If the choice was between an RR501 or PAT03 X10 transceiver.

I also would recommend the PAT03 over the RR501.
As Brian stated the PAT03 has updated internals so it sends a stronger X10 PLC signal then the typical X10 modules previously carried by X10.
It also isn't affected buy noise as easy as the RR501 or the TM751
Since the RR501 hasn't been updated it is most likely old stock from X10 WTI which had very poor QC.
If it is indeed a new production run the build quality will have improved.

I do not know what differences the current versions may have. However, the RR501 had a stronger PLC output (10Vpp vs. 5Vpp) than did any of the PLC transmitters designed/redesigned after introduction of the CM11A. One with a 2011 datecode still had the higher output while a redesigned TM751 from 2011 had the lower output.

Also, the RR501 had an RF receiver that was integrated into the main circuit board so there was, perhaps, less reason to redesign it.

But I do not know whether the current RR501 still has that higher output nor do I know what the PLC output level of the PAT03 might be.

Were I in the market for one or the other, I would first ask X10.com about the PLC output levels of each before deciding.

I think I am going to try the PAT03. Thanks for the advice.
