motorized window blinds control
« on: August 01, 2005, 09:56:46 AM »

I'm in the process of building a house and
planning on putting motorized window blinds.
I would like to control them from a PC.  I
was looking thru the x10 product and saw that
the X10 Pro Universal Module will work for
what I'm doing.  However, can someone explain
to me exactly how these modeules are
installed?  What kind of power source does it
hook up to?  I have about 30 windows to
control, can ActiveHome Pro control all 30
windows seprately?  Am I going to use 1
module per window or can I use 1 module for 2
windows?

I need answers to these questions so that I
will know what to tell my electrician whether
he should run power cables close to the
windows so that I can hook up the modules.

thanks

The UM506 Universal Module plugs into an AC
wall socket and can receive X10 On/Off
signals over the power line.  It has a SPST
low-voltage relay (5A, 24VDC or 100VA, 30VAC)
for an output which can be configured for
either continuous or momentary (about 1 sec)
operation.  Assuming that one momentary relay
closure suffices for both opening and closing
the blinds, you'll need one module for each
window to be controlled, and two AC sockets -
one for the module and one for the blind
motor.

Each X10 housecode can control up to 16
different units, so you'll need to use 2
housecodes, and probably two different
remotes since it's a pain to constantly
switch back and forth between housecodes on
one remote.  Or you could use around 10 SS13A
"Stick-A-Switch" (each can control 3 modules)
.

Depending on the size of your house, the
ActiveHome Pro (CM15A) interface may not have
sufficient RF reception range to receive an
RF signal from anywhere in the house.  You
may want to take a look at the WGL V572A all-
housecode transceiver (www.smarthome.com).
However if you're planning to control the
blinds via downloaded timers and macros in
the CM15A, that ought to work for the entire
house (with the addition of a phase coupler).

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

Shawn, do you (or anyone else on the board)
have any suggestions or recommendations for
where to buy motorized blinds?  I am looking
to do something similar to what you have
described.
