Light switch ground wire
« on: November 16, 2005, 09:38:40 PM »

Hiya all.. Does anyone else notice that the
dimmable wall switches don't have a ground
wire? There's a tiny screw on the side
keeping the faceplate on, so I don't think
that's it.. Should I just tape the ground
wire up? If anyone has any solutions or
suggestions it would be
appreciated...thanks in advance...

Some put the wire under one of the two
mounting screws holding in in the box.

A ground wire connection isn't necessary
since the circuitry is enclosed in plastic.
It is true the triac is touching the metal
faceplate, but it is of the isolated tail
variety and can be considered to be part of
the plastic case.  If you are using a
grounded metal box, the screws will ground
the faceplate anyway.

The ground wire can be curled up and tucked
into the back of the box (no tape is needed)
or you can put a loop under the mounting
screws as Brian suggests.

Tucking under mounting screws only works if
you have conduit (metal piping) and use
that conduit as ground (as here in Cook
County Illinois). If they / you are using
plastic boxes, you must have a seperate
ground wire run through out.

Its a plastic box with the two main wires
and one uncoated wire, which Im assuming is
the ground...Im a litle apprehensive using
it without a ground, but since some users
suggest it I may just go for it...As far as
connecting it to the mounting screw option,
will the plastic box make a diff? thanks
all..

The un-insulated wire is the ground wire.
The only difference a plastic box makes is
that the faceplate isn’t inherently grounded
when screwed into the box.  If it makes you
feel any better, mechanical (regular)
switches don’t have a ground wire connection.
