CM15a Timer issues
« on: September 22, 2005, 09:37:19 PM »

I have been using a CM15A controller for
the past six months without any issues but
in the last two weeks the CM15A is loosing
it's time.  Timers and macros that worked
for months no longer work on time.  I have
not changed anything or added any new
devices.  The only thing that I have added
is a Linsys Wireless Router to my house and
eversince the CM15A does not keep the
currect time.  Can the RF from the router
have a affect on my CM15A

I've read where users have had wireless
routers cause problems with X10 wireless
cams and other 2gig rf devices. Does your
activity monitor show any abnormal activity?
Can you move the devices farther apart? My
phone plays havoc with my cams but only when
close together. Moving one or the other may
help.

sisto:  Is your CM15A losing or gaining
time?  I have never heard of anyone having
a problem with it losing time but will gain
time under certain circumstances.

If it is gaining time, my guess is that it
is caused by the Router (or its PSU)
putting noise on the powerline.  If this is
the problem, you will need to plug your
router into a noise filter.  Be aware that
most noise filters will also suck up some
of your X10 signal, so optimally you should
use an "X10 noise filter."

You can diagnose this as the source by
unplugging your router for a while and
seeing if the problem goes away.  You can
accurately measure the time by setting up a
timer to turn a digital clock plugged into
an appliance module of and then on again at
midnight (or noon).  Most digital clocks
will reset to midnight if they lose power
so if the clock is displaying the correct
time, the CM15A is set correctly (or at
least was set correctly when the timer last
ran).

My CM15A is gaining time. Do you have a
specific model for a noice filter?

Any noise filter that has been designed for
use with X10 should be fine.  One of the
cheapest options is the X10 Pro XPPF.  It
is only rated for 5A, but this is way more
than enough for your router.  While you are
at it, you might want to get several of
them for use with other electronic
equipment. You can get it for $14.99 at
Automated Outlet:

They have a very competitive price and
provide good customer service (with all the
recommendations I have been giving them it
is too bad I don't get a kick back ;) ).

BTW:  I just discovered that Automated
Outlet has a special promotion on where new
customers who make a order over $100 will
receive a free Palm Pad Remote.  Just
type "palmpad" (all lower case) in the
coupon code section when you order online.

This promotion is only for new customers
(not existing customers) and is subject to
change or cancellation at any time.
