RF Brighten Bug
« on: January 12, 2005, 11:35:31 PM »

This should be an easy one for you guys...

If I have an RF Brighten command in a
macro, it only sends the bright command
without addressing the module first.  I
have to put in RF On, then RF Bright to get
it to work.

That's a good point. Unlike regular powerline
commands in macros, this isn't done
automatically by the interface. For RF
commands, it works like our remote controls
-- a bright command is always sent on its own.

This way of doing things gives users finer RF
control, but does mean you have to be more
explicit in your instructions. Would it be
better for us to always add the On command?

I want the ability for a macro to brighten
without sending "ON" first.  Otherwise, a
simulated sunrise would keep going to 100%
before adjusting to the next level.  Am I
misunderstanding the issue here?

X10 Pro:  Maybe it shouldn't be changed as
you're correct in that it would allow finer
control.  Maybe AHP should have a simple
and advanced mode.  I was getting confused
with my other macros since sometimes AHP
seems "intelligent" and sometimes not.

Michael - most of X10.com's devices won't
allow you to go from off to a dimmed state
without turning on first, so that really
doesn't matter.  The only way to simulate
your sunrise with a basic lamp module is to
never really turn it off, just dim it down
99%.  Of course, then you'll probably hear
the dimmer whine.

Actually, my macro looks something like this:

A1 ON
A1 DIM 80%
DELAY 5 MINUTES
A1 BRIGHTEN 5%
WAIT 5 MINUTES
A1 BRIGHTEN 5%
etc.

Initially, it turns on to full brightness,
but then dims.  The remaining Brighten
commands do not make the lamp go to 100%
first (only the first one).

One-Way lamp modules can't brighten from
the "off" state. They can only go to "full
on" (100%) from an "off" state. As mentioned
previously, you can either use a two-way
lamp module, or dim the lamp down 99%
instead of turning it off. Then, you can
brighten it back up slowly.

Understood.  That is what I do.  My
original comment was to X10Pro's "Would it
be  better for us to always add the On
command?"  I replied that I wouldn't be
able to brighten (after the initial ON) if
the command to brighten was changed to ON,
then BRIGHTEN.

I suggested that I misunderstoof X10Pros
suggestions, have I?

Michael: Are you talking about RF commands,
PLC, or just in general? If a module is
already on, sending it an ON command doesn't
change its state at all -- brightness level
stays where it is. For lamp modules, though,
we use Bright 100% instead of ON, so that the
lamp turns on to a known level.

As far as the RF commands are concerned, I
think it's better to leave them as is. Since
they're sort of an advanced feature anyway,
keeping the finer level of control seems
preferable.
