Flood Cams will not turn off
« on: August 31, 2005, 11:15:52 PM »

I have 2 Flood Cams that I've recently adde
to my system.  The issue I have is that
once the lights come on at night, they do
not go off.  There are quite a few moths,
and bugs flying around the lights, are the
motion sensors that sensitive?

I've tried all the tricks I could find here
in the forums.  This issue still happens
when there are normal light bulbs in, so
it's not a halogen thing.  I've had a week
of frustration trying to get these flood
cams to work properly.

Any other suggestions.

just set up my flood light unit and it
worked fine the whole time on the first
day. When it came on the second night it
stayed on all night and day. Is this common?

Throw them away and buy new ones from x10.
They were cheap.

I've found that these sensors are fairly
sensitive.  In the middle of the night I was
awakened by my front door chime indicating
that there was someone on my porch.  I got
up to look and what I found was a large moth
actually crawling around on the sensor.  If
the moths are dive bombing the floodlights,
then they may also be tapping that sensor
and setting it off.  Eventually you will get
spiders building webs to try and capitalize
on this moth dance party.

I also have a freight train that runs behind
my house and the heavier trains rumble
enough that they also set off the motion
detector by vibrating the wall of the house.

The moth season in Colorado is fairly short,
so I just took a broom to the spider webs
and shut the lights down for a couple of
nights.  All is well again now.

Floodlights staying on is an extremely
common problem. X10 will give you a series
of steps to run though that will fix the
problem 10% of the time, otherwise the
problem is environmental such as Dan
describes but most often the part is
defective or being interfered with by your
house wiring. I would give this product a
rating of 1 on a scale of 10.

Forgot to mention...non incandescent (is
that how you spell that?) lighting can be
a "light wont go off" issue.

Some halogen, mercury vapor or other form
of bulb that has no real filament (like
edison invented it) can cause this issue.

Don't ever give x10 your email address
unless you want to get tons of spam from
them.
