I loved my x10 "stuff"
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:56:39 AM »

I bought the Protector Plus and a Wide Eye
Instant ON in the past, it worked fine.  Yes
the parts didn't work at times, but there was
a n one year warranty.  What's all this
complaint about x10??? I loved everything
that it did.

We bought 4 camera system with ninja
mounts, love them they are inexpensive and
work well, took me a while to figure some
things out but thats half the fun,ive
bought 30 grand autos ive had more problems
with than this system. It is what you make
it and your basic knowledge.I had no
problem with customer service from site but
calling was onother thing i was on hold for
an hr and ended up emailing them and then
they where very quick to answer, ive had
more problems with home depots customer
service than x10s and ive spent lots of
money there.I have just ordered a security
system and am sure if i take my time and
use patience it will work as well.I still
cannot beat thier price and i have gotten
what i paid for and it has and is working
and i still enjoy installing their stuff. If
you want plug and play with no work or
mental ability use it aint for you?

I new to the X10 products and find they
work great, it does take some time and
reading to get it how you want it....It
isn't plug and play but it sure works after
a few hours of playing... Happy so far.

uh yeah, they are great even though they
never work.  i especially like the way they
keep me running around fixing them.  i
didn't expect these cameras to be honing my
troubleshooting skills.  that was extra
benefit unexpected.  now i can get them
working with only a few hours a day spent.
i will never buy another company's
product.  what would i do with all the free
time?

I've been reading the forum for about 20
minutes now, and I've noticed that skootch
has made a negative reply in every post.
For someone who dislikes X10 so much, you
sure spend a lot of unnecessary time with
it.  It you're going to knock the products,
how about at least giving specific examples
of your problems so others might avoid them.
I've been using X10 for several years, and
yes, it's not as spectacular as the ads make
it out to be, but it does work.  If you have
any common sense, it's pretty obvious that
you're not going to get home automation
perfection at these prices.
When I moved to a bigger house, my system
became unreliable.  But I put in a phase
coupler/repeater, and swithed to SmartHome
Insteon light switches, and my system is
working great.  If your lights work
sporatically, I highly recommend a phase
coupler.  You can get one that plugs into
your dryer outlet for about $20.
I have 4 cameras, and I do have issues with
the range.  If my house was one story, I
would use wired cameras for the two most
distant from the receiver.  I can get all 4
to work well enough by adjusting the
antennas just right, but it's very touchy.
I'm going to experiment with some
modifications to the attennas to see if I
can improve the picture.
But overall, I can confidently say I've got
what I paid for. If you don't mind tinkering
(or actually enjoy it), then X10 can work
fine for you.  X10 is at the low end of the
scale, but you'll have to spend at least 4
or 5 times as much to go to the next level
of quality.

Jeff
try to put the cameras more of 15 f of the
receiver and let me know if you get good
picture (they state 100f range) I only want 50 f

Try to get support from the CS
Try to get refund when you return the stuff
for useless or defective or whatever rason

Home automation and home security is fine
but wireless cams, they sucks

I have tested them, and the wireless cameras
will work at 100' as advertised, if you have
an unobstructed line of sight.  So the claim
of "up to" 100' is technically accurate, but
since this is not the case in 99.99% of
installs, it is certainly misleading. (Your
mileage may vary.)

However, the cheezyness of the X10 ads was a
clue for me, so I researched the products
before I bought any, and I knew what I was
getting into.

I did have a couple of power supplies go bad
on my Ninja mounts while still under
warranty, and customer support was
excellent.  They shipped new ones out the
same day, by 2 day service, with no need to
return the old ones. That was about 4 years
ago, so things could have changed, but my
experience was good.  I have not tried to
return anything for credit, so I can't
comment on X10 specifically for that.  But
typically, businesses don't like to take
back products that are in working order, so
I'm not surprised that people have had
problems with that.

All of my X10 stuff is still working after
four years, with the exception of one lamp
module that I abused to death beyond its
rated capacity with way too many Christmas
lights.

So I think the products are fine for the
price, as long as you buy everything on
sale.  And they do work as advertised, if
you read the fine print, but I do think they
should tone down their wild marketing hype.

shove it where the sun don't shine you
friggin zealot fanatic.  you tell us how
wonderful this crap is.  if i pay for a
product that is advertised to meet certain
specs, they damn well better live up to
those specs.  if they don't, legal channels
are a waste of time, but word of mouth can
make or break a company.  i don't give
specifics because all of this stuff is
junk.   all of it.   don't buy it.    if
you do buy it, don't say you weren't
warned.  period.
