We have a large house. We arm our system by
delay which turns on a security light
outside until it is armed, then it shuts
off. Anyone know of a way to have a 'small'
light outside your entry door so that if
system is armed its on, and off if unarmed?
Any suggestions and comments would be
greatly appreciated. Tech support knew of
nothing. Thank you.

Here is what I did

From an article that I wrote:
Here is the way that I have found.  It is
really pretty simple.  No problem and thank
you for emailing me.  I was always
wondering if the alarm really armed when I
pressed the button on the remote from the
porch.  I couldn't hear the chime because I
was too far away, and there was no other
way to tell.  One day after a vacation I
came home and found at that my alarm had
been disarmed all of our vacation.  Thank
goodness nothing was stolen.  I knew that
something had to be done.  So I looked
around on the net and found nothing, do I
constructed something myself.

What you need are:
(1)    POWERFLASH Burglar Alarm Interface
(PF284)
(1)    LED Detector Probe from
http://www.smarthome.com/8013.html
It is really simple to put together, all
you do is trim the edges of the LED
Detector Probe until it is small enough to
not cover up any of the leds around the
armed led.  Then you stick the detector
probe on the Armed LED.  Be sure that it
sticks good and there is no light coming in
from around the edges.  Then you take the
end of the probe cord and connect it to a
powerflash unit.

The Powerflash must be setup for Mode 3,
Input as Dry Contact.  Then you set the
unit and house code dials to a light that
you can see from the outside or maybe you
could even set out a night light in a
window beside the door, either way on an
x10 module set to the same unit code and
house code as the powerflash unit.  For me
I use my front porch light.  Now whenever
your security system is armed whatever
light that you chose will turn on, and when
it is disamed will turn off.

Now you can leave your house with your mind
at rest because you now know that you are
protected.  Enjoy!

I have installed the console and 3 door
sensors and when I press arm from the
remote i get only a constant chime and the
unit will not arm... Whats up with that ?

I liked the idea of using an LED detector to
trigger the powerflash as posted by Andrew
Flanery.  I bought the items but I have a
question and hope someone can answer.  The
LED detector actually has 2 conductors that
go into a round cylinder thing that feeds
from a incoming round wire with a earphone
type jack on it.  Does anyone know if I cut
the wires for the powerflash to include the
round cylinder thing, or do I throw that
away too?  BTW, what is that round thing?
