any body ever been able to buy the glass
break sensor from x-10? If so what do you
think about them?

Dear Jim,

I have removed the magnetic contacts (reed
switches) from the door/window sensors and
soldiered the 5150 Sentrol glass break
sensors to the leads (which I cut down to
10.5 inches).  The Sentrols are normally
closed, self generating piezo electrically
activating "vibration" sensors that upon a
significant flex in window glass, generate a
open circuit which the door/window sensor
monitors for and sends out an open tx to the
security console.  The minimum amount of
flex to activate the Sentrol is listed as
50% of that force which is required to break
the glass (10' diameter glass protection).
In real terms, you have to beat the glass
pretty hard to get an open circuit so false
alarms are minimal (i.e. from banging, wind,
noise vibrations).  Also, you can wire
muliple Sentrols to a single door/window
sensor.

Great....Ithnk you find these a great deal
more robust that the windowbugs.  Note: I
splice, soldier and glue the splice behind
the Door/Window sensor for a good look.  I
also use two diameters of heatshrink to
first protect the two spliced/soldiered
wires and then the second larger diameter
heatshrink to cover the two joined
sections.  I then use epoxy to glue them to
the back of the d/w sensor.

One other note:  The 5150 comes with a
seperate piece of special acrylic tape to
mount the sensor but only one per unit (the
adhesion is extremely powerful so you can't
test with it).  I bought-back carpet tape to
use for placement testing. First cut to size
except on side which I cut about 1/2 inch
larger and fold over onto itself to give me
a tab to pull the sensor off the window. The
double back carpet tape ($2.00 a roll) is
best because it does not have a foam core
like most double-back tapes (i.e., 3M).
After you temporarily mount the sensor on
the glass, test it by pounding the glass
with a screwdriver handle (yup, this is
recommended by Sentrol).  You will find that
you virtually have to break the glass to get
an open circuit which you can verify by two
flashing lights on the X10 Door/Window
sensor.  I haven't broken any glass yet but
it feels pretty close to being necessary to
get the sensor to open the circuit.  This is
great because you then will not get false
alarms from wind, people bumping commercial
glass windows (street level glass at
businesses).

a false alarm!!

I am new to the home security systems.
I just got a Ademco Lynxr-en Honeywell
installed. Is there a way to test the glass
break sensor. I tried clanking keys against
the window, and breaking a glass milk
bottle with a hammer. I had no luck with
either mehod. Any suggestions would be
great.
