I would like to be able to raise a window
half way open and be able to set my
security system. I checked on extra
magnetic contacts at Radio Shack and they
are around $5.00 a piece. I have 12 window
sensors. Is it possible to use a small
magnet glued to a piece of wood or
something just to makle it the right heigth
to align with the switch. Has anyone tried
this? Any problems with this? Just
curious.... Thanks

It should work. You can always get a few and
test it. I think Radio Shack also has the
magnets that mount separate from the set.

Do I have this correct.  You have the
magnet portion of the switch mounted on the
side of the window and the switch on the
side of the casing?  If so, then another
magnet below the original at the amount
below that you want to raise the window
will work.  It would cost more but you
could just buy the switch from RS and only
use the magnet portion.  I did that on a
sliding door that had a security position
that allowed the door to be open a little
to let in a breeze.  Of course here the
swiches and magnets were at the top.  Just
wire the switches in series.

Dual contact points work fine!  The magnetic
contacts are composed of two pieces: the
reed switch which has the wires from the
door/window sensor attached to it AND the
magnet which has no wires connect to it.
Inside the reed switch are two wires that
touch when a magnetic force is applied
(closed) and separate (open) when the
magnetic force is removed.  You can place
multiple magnets along the course of you
window path and each time the reed comes in
close proximity to the magnetics it will
close and you can ARM the system...if a
thief would move or slide the window, the
reed switch would first move away from the
magnetic force of the magnetic contact and
the alarm would sound...even though later it
would pass through the magnetic field of any
other magnetic contacts you mounted.  Once
an open is sensed by the Door/Window sensor
it will send a signal to the console, and if
Armed, the system will activate an alarm.

The biggest problem with this type of
installation that permits a window to remain
partially open is that a thief could place a
hard or arm inside the widow and either
introduce a magnet to the reed switch or
place a wire across the two screws of the
reed switch to then open the window without
causing an alarm...therefore, try to place
the reed switch and door/window sensor
father away from the opening than a person
can reach.  Often, this will prevent you
from fully opening the window as the magnet
will stop the window from fully opening ALSO
MAKE SURE YOU PUT A MOTION DETECTOR IN THE
ROOM WITH SUCH A WINDOW CONFIGURATION AS A
BACKUP TO FOIL ENTRY.
